If I lost net access, believe me, the //Skyway\\ will go down in flames. You'll all get a big letter complete with a 1,000 line special thanks section, a 3,000 line indulgent goodbye, and a 6,000 line signature file of 'Mats quotes. On the other hand, if I die, I probably won't have time to prepare such a thing, so you'll just have to call me up and find out about that one. [(816)-785-5220.] Again, it's been a month between issues. This is hardly what I'd like to do, but time constraints with school have limited the time I can spend on the //Skyway\\. I try to get to everybody's subscribe and file requests ASAP, but a new issue takes alot longer. I could just make the whole thing a mail deflector, but I hate those things. (They're easy to set up, but sooooo impersonal. And if you can't tell, I hate impersonal.) I was floored by the first letter that's in this issue. You'll see what I mean. * Wow. * There's some more guitar transcriptions in this issue! Sadly Beautiful, Talent Show, and Rock n' Roll Ghost are all there for your attempt to emulate the 'Mats themselves and for you to try and impress your friends and meet co-eds at parties. (I always include this guitar stuff at the end so all non guitar-transcription interested people out there don't have to deal with it if they don't want to. But for those that are sending these transcriptions in, they are MUCHO appreciated!) There's not much interesting to say...no summer job or summer job stories. I could go on forever about genetics or 12th century Asian Indian literature or PASCAL or the Kenning translation of the Oddessey, but I figure we all listen to the Replacements to escape such mundane things and hear about real life. Okay, letsee, what about real life... Well, Saturday me and four friends were sitting around and we made enough noise that the cops came. (And it wasn't like it was a drunk fest either. Two guys had been smoking a quarter of a joint for about five minutes, and I'm sure by then the cops were on their way.) We were merely watching the movie "Repo Man". Nothing became of it, but it's pretty interesting to watch people's expressions when you tell them the story. "DUDE!!! What were you doin', man??! Nuthin'?!! That's AWE-some! You're CRAZ-y!!" Oh well. In other words, life would be totally monotonous if it weren't so hectic. Hopefully Bash and Pop will start touring again soon. Love, Matty P.S. I've been listening to a lot of Husker Du recently. I'm a big fan of Candy Apple Grey, particularly. (I love their version of the Byrd's "Eight Miles High". It just sounds like somebody standing all one in a big snowdrift frustrated as hell. (That's the Min-ne-a-sota image, there.) So send me mail and we'll trade Husker Du epithets. (But don't worry... I'm not turning this into a Husker Du/'Mats list.) //===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===\\ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 93 16:57:14 EDT From: coleen@Cayman.COM (Coleen J O'Brien) Subject: hi ... Hi Matt, I thought that I would not let the fact that I don't have too much interesting to say prevent me from sending you a note. It's been really great reading the newsletter this summer. Some friends of mine are friends of David Minehan's, and they have appreciated having an additional source for news of David as he tours around. A lot of people have sent notes describing how they first got interested in the Replacements, so I thought I would share my story. I sort of knew who they were, and I think that I had a few tapes, but I didn't really develop a soft spot for them until my sister met them. On the Pleased to Meet Me tour, she was working in a David's Cookies next to a record store. The mats had an in-store appearance, and she mentioned to a guy that worked in the store that she was disappointed that she would not get to meet them. He told them, and they came over to the cookie store after their appearance and signed her cassette. Tommy even included a personal sentiment when he signed the cassette, which was "Hi Kara - Maybe I'm amazed!" The rest of the band was basically pretty unfriendly, but Tommy hung out in the cookie store for a while and talked to my sister. Then when she went see them that night, he bought her a beer and they talked some more. She really enjoyed meeting him, he was very friendly, nice manners, not snobby at all, and a lot of fun. She had really been having a very down summer & feeling like she'd never find a man who liked her (she's very shy), etc., so having Tommy be so pleasant to her was really good for her self-esteem. So ever since then, they've been one of my favorite bands. I guess that's a silly reason, but after all, they are a great band to like no matter how dumb your reasons. Well, I hope that the new school year is going well for you and look forward to more issues of skyway. cjo [ Coleen - I was astounded by the Minehan reference. -- M@ ] [P.S. I know knowbody who joins a replacements list should ask, "what's the deal with slim and bob?" Anyway, since that moronic question has been my only contribution to this list so far, i guess i'd better introduce myself: my name's james clark and i am currently 19. i have decided not to fill out the survey becuse i have only been intererested in the 'mats for about a year and a half, and have never seen them in concert; so most of the questions are impertinent for me. the reason i like the 'mats so much is that they are the only band i have discovered that was good at kick-ass, garage-style rock, and could still express the feelings of its members in songs like "Unsatisfied" or "Here Comes a Regular." also, they are the only band that i can listen to for a week straight and not get sick of. unfortunately, i only have four 'mats alblums and some of the solo stuff (for monetary reasons); and, as i proved with my last entry, i don't know jack-shit, about the band itself incedentally, i saw the saturday night live version of "bastards of young" a few weeks ago. i don't know if everyone has seen this, but it was great! bob was wearing striped orange and yellow body suit with no sleaves, bell-bottom style legs that ended at mid-ankle, and a v-neck that extended down to his crotch. i don't know if it is true, but i heard that they were given free bar before the performance (bad idea). at the end of the song they all just kinda flop onto the ground. i also heard that they were told they could do ANYTHING, as long as no one cussed. halfway through the song bob hits a wrong note or something and paul looks over and says, "fuck you, bob!" i'm sure this is old news for those that have seen a 'mats concert, but i thought it was a fitting introduction to their live performances. last of all, i am trying to learn how to play "here comes a regular' ,but i am having trouble with some of the cords (especially in the chorus and the bridge sections). if anyone has the lyrics and/or chords to that song, i would be forever in debt if they sent them to me. thanks --james [P.S. PAUL WESTERBERG Paul Westerberg went straight from Next Big Thing to Beloved Living Legend without making the usual stop at Really Successful Rock Star. Yet on his first tour since the breakup of the Replacements - a series of summer club dates preceding theater shows in the fall - he confirmed his place on the top floor of the tower of song. After nearly two hours of rampaging rock 'n' roll at New York's Irving Plaza, Westerberg pulled out his acoustic guitar and sang "Sadly Beautiful" and "Here Comes a Regular," songs so powerful that whether your idea of the king of that particular hill is Hank Williams in '52 or Dylan in '65 or Neil Young in '73, your heart would tell you that in 1993 Paul Westerberg is at the top. Westerberg dared comparisons to his old band by sticking with the Replacements' format - bass, drums and two guitars. His new team (Neighborhoods guitarist David Minehan, Raindogs bassist Darren Hill and drummer Josh Freese) set the 'Mats legend on fire and held it aloft. The advantage the new guys had was probably less musical than psychological- the Replacements were so emotionally entwined that if one of them started screwing up during a show, they all went over like a row of dominoes. They could be great or mediocre, so at the first indication of mediocrity they'd dice straight for the third option: deliberately horrible. Unfortunately there were too many shows where one member would pull the "horrible" cord while the other three were still shooting for great. At Irvin Plaza there were several moments when things went wrong and Westerberg go that "Let's parachute!" look in his eyes, but each time the new band kept rocking like bastards, laughing it off, and before long Paul would find a place to climb back up and continue. Which is a great thing becuase Paul Westerberg sailing through "Left of the Dial," "Mannequin Shop," "Achin' to Be," "Things," "Can't Hardly Wait," "If Only You Were Lonely," "First Glimmer," "Answering Machine," "Dyslexic Heart," "Merry Go Round" and "Alex Chilton" is as satisfying as rock 'n' roll gets. In the audience smelly, sweat-soaked strangers jumped up and hugged each other. What at first seemed to be Westerberg's worst song choice turned out to be the best: When the band kicked into "I'll Be You," it felt as if that song should have been left to the Replacements. It was the closest they ever came to a hit single and the song's sentiment ("A dream too tired to come true left a rebel without a clue...If it's just a game then let's hold hands just the same") spoke for the special cirumstances of those four friends united against the world. Yet when Minehan and Hill moved forward and howled the words along with Westerberg, "I'll Be You" became an anthem not just for the Replacements, but for the Neighborhoods, the Raindogs and every other great band that did not get the success they deserved. And for every other person in that overcrowded bar who had not given up on youthful dreams. And for those too far gone to ever get back. Very very good. But it could never come close to the greatness of a Mats show. I admit, it was unfair of me to hope that that could be duplicated, but sue me, I miss them like crazy. Paul just didn't seem into it at the beginning, not at all. And the crowd was terrible...a bunch of drunk 23-year-old frat boys who screamed at all the drinking references. Paul's acoustic versions of "Sadly Beautiful" and "Here Comes a Regular" were so moving that I cried, frankly, but the people there seemed most impressed when Paul uttered the word "whiskey." Pathetic, pathetic, and it broke my heart. I wonder what makes Paul so tense when he's in Minneapolis? Is his mother in the audience or something? He's never said too much on the subject, at least not that I've seen. Oh I don't know. It's kind of sad to think about. Definitely a show highlight; I can't hardly believe I forgot it the first time. 2) There hasn't been much chatter about Slim's album, which kinda surprised me. There's a track on there called "Ain't Exactly Good" that I thought would surely spark some commentary, since it's a reply to Chris Mars. I almost volunteered for it when I made the initial suggestion, but wimped out. But it's not as if it's a real big deal.... To you who want your songs on this tape: Mail me a tape with your bands song(s) on it. I'll compile the songs into one tape featuring the best couple of songs by each band who sends me a tape. Which and how many songs by each band will depend upon (1) how many tapes I get, and (2) how many songs are on each tape -- if people send me a tape with a lot of songs, that's fine, but unless you specify which few songs you consider your best, then I'll choose those which I consider the best. Anyway, once I've made this compilation, I can then dub it until I turn blue, and mail a copy to everyone who sends me a blank tape, a small, stamped padded envelope, and their address. My suggestion would be to mail me a blank tape in one of these envelopes and to enclose within the envelope a slip of paper (or, ideally, a mailing label) with your address on it and sufficient postage (in the form of stamps) to get the recorded tape back to you; i.e., the same amount it took to mail me the blank tape in the first place. If I recall, it costs ~$1 to mail one cassette tape first class in a small padded envelope like the ones they sell at the U.S. Post Office. So, bottom line, it'll cost ~$2 postage and the price of a blank tape to get this compilation tape. Such a deal. Roy Beaumont was wondering what would be Paul's next single. I'm not sure whether this means anything, but the local "open-minded" commercial radio station which I favor (95.3 WRSI out of Greenfield, MA, for anyone who cares) was playing "First Glimmer" pretty heavily when the album first came out, and I've now heard "Mannequin Shop" at least once on there, but never once have I heard "World Class Fad" -- which is the actual first single, yes? I mean I've seen the video.... I would have to guess that the next single would be either "First Glimmer" or "Runaway Wind," or less likely "Dice Behind Your Shades" or "Mannequin Shop." -Mark @UMass "knowledge adds / wisdom lets slide" P.S. With the addition of this song and the two PW tunes from "Singles," Paul's album becomes _17 Songs_ and fits almost perfectly onto a 60 minute cassette. [Mark ... sorry, but your Albany review was lost in my daze that I was compiling the last issue in. I feel like a fuck. I'm sorry. Heck I hardly have enough time to read my homework. But hey I thought I would send a copy of one of my favs by Paul and the gang, Sadly Beautiful. For you sentimental types it might bring a tear to your eye (it does for me), so play it in the quietness of your room or heart. Then after you play it (so you wont get depressed) play "Attitude" or something similar. I want to thank Matt for all his work in getting all of us together! *tip of the hat* here's to you Matt. Later all and enjoy: Sadly Beautiful - The Replacements D G From the very first day that you were born D G to the very last time you waved and honked your horn. Hey, if you got this far, you probably play an instrument or something. And if you don't play an instrument, thanks for suffering through pages of guitar transcription with us.
