What...did I drop out of school? No, I just got a bunch of submissions and a few spare hours (as well as a bunch of stuff to say) so I'm putting out an issue within almost two weeks of the last one. (I'm just as surprised as you are.) First things first. As many of you already know (because I keep referring to it), I'm not supposed to have this account on Creighton University's computer. Well, pretty soon, the gig might be up. They're in the process of transferring all of the accounts from the PARROT computer to another new computer. The problem is that is it very likely that they will take a look at the student accounts at this time and realize that I'm not supposed to have one. (There's always been the chance of this occuring before and we were just lucky and never got caught.) So, we might get lucky and get transferred to another computer, or we might get our butt's kicked and lose this account. Regardless, someday, the address for the Skyway is going to change. Regardless, the list will exist at some address. All the archives are backed up. So don't worry. If the MAN decides to wipe my account tomorrow, nothing will be lost. I'll still have everybody's address and will get in contact with you all as soon as possible and let you know the new address. And I'll still have everything that I have now: all the issues ever since the list started a digest format, all the subscriber addresses, all the song transcriptions, "best of" files, etc. It may take a week or two to get re-set up, but the Skyway won't die. If you try to write me someday and you get a bounce that the address doesn't exist anymore, just send your submissions to my regular mail account at: i261@nemomus.bitnet i261%nemomus@academic.nemostate.edu i261%nemomus.bitnet@academic.nemostate.edu Any of the three work for different people. So eventually you'll get it to me. (But it's because of this that I don't run the list from my own mail account at Northeast Missouri State.) So don't panic if you get a big bad bounce report next time you try to send something to the //Skyway\\. On the lighter side, is everybody getting their issues? There's been three issues that are listed as Fall issues. If you haven't gotten one of them, drop me a note and I'll send it to you. Also, if you want any back issues, write me and I'll get those out to you ASAP. Also, following this mailing, you should be getting a copy of the SKYWAY SUBSCRIBER SURVEY following this mailing. Both addresses are listed on the survey (mine, and the survey's main creator, Ric Dube's), but it's advisable to send it to Ric considering the address change that may (or who knows, may not) be occuring soon at this end. HEY! Scott Ochs sent in his version of the lyrics to TIM. (What would we do without him?) Of course, they are up for democratic revision, so send in anything you'd like to add. Something happened in my residence hall (read: dorm) this weekeend. An R.A. quit. And the staff asked me to fill the shoes. I've been thinking pretty hard about the pros and cons of it. (I would quit my on-campus jobs in the International Student Office and as the Student Services Coordinator, so it wouldn't necessarily take up more time that I'm spending right now, I think. Who the hell knows.) That's what's been going on in my life recently... HEY...DO YOU LIVE WITHIN FIVE HOURS OF IOWA CITY? If so, Westerberg is playing there on Saturday, October 16th, 1993. Scott Ochs is gonna be there. And I'm gonna be there. So drop me a line if you're goin', because I want to meet some of you bastards of young face to face. This is the thing that keeps me going somedays. So thank you all for reading. I hope he plays Answering Machine this time, dammit... -- Matty --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Wed, 22 Sep 93 16:42:39 EDT From: Pauline Petersen Subject: hello hi there, my name is pauline and i just got the intro message for skyway and i am so excited because i love the replacements! i only learned how to use this computer system 3 days ago and i only did it so i could communicate with other people who are as into music as me. lets see-where to start...before i forget, please send me the lyrics and the best of skyway so i have them. my favorite album is probably tim, although i listen to all of them. my fave tune is definitely unsatisfied, just because he sounded so unsatisfied when he sang it. i also love here comes a regular. i got into them because my friend erik adores them, and when his band would take a break he would keep playing and always do acoustic versions of the songs between sets at the twelve:01 shows (thats the band he's in, they're really good). i loved the lyrics, alot of them hit close to home, i guess. i saw westerberg at the stone pony (with erik, actually) and i was thrilled because he did the old stuff. erik flipped at skyway-that was the first replacements cover he ever did. the moral of the story is that i love this band, and i'm glad to see some other people do too. i'll think about some questions for next time! have a great day..... -pauline petersen@tsclion.trenton.edu P.S. [I added this from another letter she wrote...] and i forgot to ask...anyone ever heard the del amitri acoustic version of sadly beautiful?? one hell of a cover, thats all i can say...enjoy your day!! --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Wed, 29 Sep 93 13:22:47 EDT From: labuskif@roadrunner.pictel.com (Frank Labuski) Subject: REVIEW : 3/28/89 I was thinking about all the times I have seen either the Replacements or Paul Westerberg and decided that the best show I saw was my first. It took place at the Opera House in Boston, MA on 3/28/89. It was just after "Don't Tell A Soul" came out and they were fantstic!! It was great to hear a lot of the older stuff you don't hear (often) these days live "Color Me Impressed", "Don't Ask Why", "Answering Machine", "Favorite Thing", etc. Thinking back on it, I feel lucky to have seen them before Paul Westerberg didn't feel like playing a lot of the older songs. Anyway, I was psyched and it was a great show. The other day, I found a review that I saved from the show and I'm icluding it here. It's interesting to read to get a feel for how the band was perceieved and how they actually felt and played their music. AHHHH yes, the good old days!! Being a very amateur guitarist, I haven't been able to figure out all the chords to 'Bastards of the Young', so I'd appreciate a transcription of it. If you get the chance, go see them. They were great. Anyway, as I'm sure some of you know, their lead singer/ guitarist is Laurie Lindeen, who sang backup on 'Dice Behind Your Shades'. Well, I had sort of an odd conversation with her after the show that went something like: Me: That was the best show I've seen since I saw the 'Mats in '87. (OK, so I exaggerated a little after a couple of beers. It was a good show, though) LL: Thanks. My boyfriend used to play in the Replacements. Me: Really? Hm. Oh, yeah? Who? (I was sort of confused) LL: Paul. Me: Westerberg? (who else) Since when? LL: A couple of years. Me: Huh... Well, I enjoyed the show, hope you come back, blah, blah, blah... So, what's the deal with that? I hadn't heard anything. Maybe she was just giving me shit. I'm sure she gets that sort of thing all the time: (You know PAUL?! What's he REALLY like, man!?!). <--{done in Simpsons' Otto voice} Christ, I sound like I'm on ET talking about Burt and Loni. I saw it for sale at a local record store for $22.. It seemed to be mostly songs from the pre-Don't Tell A Soul era, with a couple DTAS songs also. And some interview snippets, it appears... About 15 or so songs, I'd say. No info on when/where it's from on the box, And I have no idea what sort of quality it is.. Anyone seen/heard this? Is it worth picking up? I may just get it anyway, and if I do I'll let you know what it's like. Also, at this store they had a 7" flexidisc of Another GIrl, Another Planet, (live from the Madison show on Inconcerated) b/w Stand in Line (by Midnight Oil).. I picked it up, but was wondering if anyone knew the story on this one - is it rare? What is it for (since it's kind of strange to see the 'Mats and Midnight Oil on one record)? I think it says something about "Bob" magazine, but I could be wrong. One last question - are there any 'Mats boots on CD besides the Inconcerated promo and Live at Lingerie? If so, does anyone know a mail order place I could get them from? Also, what is a good price to pay for Inconcerated? I saw it on disc for $40, and decided even 5 live 'Mats songs weren't worth t that much.. Should I expect to pay this much, or was that just a ripoff? Thanks in advance for any help.. Reply to the list or (preferrably, I guess) email me directly. Thanks again.
