I myself have been playing guitar for about 5 years and have figured out some Replacements songs and would be willing to e-mail them in if they haven't been done already. By the way, I believe a transcription of "Alex Chilton" is in the November issue of "Guitar For The Practicing Musician" magazine. Anyway, my name is Dean Roe and I'm a junior at UM-Minneapolis. I've been a HUGE 'mats fan for about 5 years. I have the following Replacements items: * Boink! (LP) * Live And Drunk (LP) * I Will Dare 12" single (LP) * Don't Buy or Sell, It's Crap (LP) * Aragon Ballroom, Chicago 6/10/89 bootleg (audio cassette) * Rotterdam, 4/10/91 bootleg (video) Things I'm looking for copies of: * All b-sides to their singles * Live at Lingerie * The Shit Hits The Fans * Inconcerated * all of their music videos and the Saturday Night Live performance This Tuesday (10/5/93) I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Mars. He was doing an in-store appearance at Northern Lights in St. Paul. It was pretty exciting! He autographed my "Horseshoes & Hand Grenades" ("Happy Halloween!"; my girlfriend got "Drink more Ovaltine") and I even won "75% Less Fat" in a store drawing. He was very nice and pretty funny. I talked with him for just a few minutes, mostly about his artwork. If anyone is interested, he said 3 of his paintings are displayed in the Rogue Bar here in Minneapolis. Anyone know what the story is behind the song "We're The Replacements" by They Might Be Giants? It's so hilarious! Well, I must be going...any UM students get in touch w/ me! Cooper) Greetings! Like you, I absolutely love the Mats, and I am totally excited to have found this list. My name is Justin Cooper (Yeah, the fact that I am a Mats fan precedes my name!), and I am a sophomore at Dartmouth College. You guys said you wanted to know my favorite Mats songs, albums, etc. so here they are: Favorite Songs (no real order): --Nowhere is My Home (Probably my favorite. I could talk listen to this song for hours. I have no idea why it was never put on a regular album, but I consider myself lucky to have found it.) --Seen Your Video --Can't Hardly Wait (both 'Pleased to Meet Me' and 'Shit Hits the Fans' versions) --Unsatisfied --Left of the Dial --Customer --We'll Inherit the Earth --White and Lazy --If Only You Were Lonely --Take Me Down to the Hospital Favorite Album: --Let It Be Favorite Band Member --Bob Stinson As is often the case with the Mats, all of these songs have some personal meaning to me, or at least call up some vivid memories. I got into the Mats during my senior year in high school, when a friend of mine introduced them to me. After listening to them at his urging numerous times, I finally decided for once and for all that they sucked, and that I hated them. A few nights later, we got drunk and someone put on the Hootenanny (the song, not the whole album) and all of a sudden, everything changed. It all made sense. I finally understood. We listened to Hootenanny about 20 times that night, and I have not stopped loving the Mats since. Every time I find some esoteric disc or album, I snatch it up, and I have all the regular releases. This brings me to a couple of questions: --Did 'Boink' ever come out on CD, even in Europe? --What stuff should I look for in Europe when I go there this winter (I am going on an exchange program in Germany)? --Who plays lead guitar on "Like a Rolling Pin," the last song on the promo "Don't Sell or Buy, It's Crap"? Paul says "Hey, BOB, come on in here and ... play guitar." I assumed this was Bob Stinson, since the guitar playing sounds like his and the name is his. A friend of mine argues, however, that "Bob" obviously refers to Slim Dunlap, whom he claims is also named Bob, and points out that a Bob Stinson song would not likely have been included on a promo for "All Shook Down." Who is right? --Who plays harmonica on "White and Lazy"? You guys asked what music I listen to. Well, right now I am listening to "Copper Blue" by Sugar. Sitting next to the CD player, I also have John Lee Hooker--"The Healer", Randy Newman--"Good Old Boys", The Band--"Music From Big Pink", Wynton Marsalis--self titled, Bash and Pop "Friday Night is Killing Me", Operation Ivy (Berkeley thrash group) --self titled, and Robbie Robertson--self titled. On the whole, my favorite music genres are thrash/alternative, like the Mats, and classic rock (although I am getting sick of it), but I really do listen to all kinds of stuff. This summer, I went to see Bash and Pop at the Cattle Club in Sacramento, and they totally rocked. The version of "Satellite" was incredible, and the band just seemed really alive. I had a great time. I have never seen the Mats or Westerberg, but I am hoping to catch him in Boston this fall. If you have any dates or anything, please tell me. Thanks. Thanks for putting me on you list, and thanks very much for this great service! During the era when then band could not make it through a whole (let alone half) of a song. This was cool because they would, as a result, play 20 to 30 songs! I first heard them when I was in about 5th or 6th grade. (I'm a college freshman now.) My brother who was 4 years older had some of their albums dubbed from friends. I suppose that this was bout 1985-86. I listened to them occasionally for about 4 years, but when my brother moved to college I sort of forgot about them. Last year, I got "All Shook Down" from BMG. I like it, but I don't listen to it a lot. It's okay, but not my favorite. I didn't really get back into them until coming to college and visiting the radio station here. I found "Tim" on vinyl and begged the DJ to play it. It was sad -- most of the DJs here don't even really know them. One or two play the 'Mats on occasion, though. When I saw that my friend had "Let it Be," I freaked out and instantly borrowed it. I've had it about 3 weeks or so. He doesn't care; he didn't really like it. Imagine that. I had this tape that my brother had left at home one time when he came home. I never listened to it, but after coming here, I found it and decided to check it out. Being on a new Replacements kick, I instantly recognized "Hootenany." It was great. So that's my history. I'm just trying to get back into the 'Mats at the moment. My brother's tapes that I listened to during my jr. high years were great. While everyone listened to the pop stations and Milli Vanilli, I had the 'Mats from my brother. I loved the music, even then. It just had a special appeal. My favorite song back then was "Lay it Down Clown." Thanks for making Skyway. I love it. --- Derek S. From the Worcester Telegram /Evening Gazette 3/23/89 REPLACEMENTS DISMISS SELLOUT by Dave Mawson BOSTON - The Replacements are waisting no time dismissing any notions a sellout. There have been many worries of late that Minneapolis' bad boys have gone soft, but those concerns were proved unfounded seconds into last nights sold-out show at the Opera House. The subtlety and nuance of the Replacement's recent "Don't Tell A Soul" LP fell victim to an onslaught of guitar frenzy, as the quartet ripped through 25 songs in just under 75 minutes. The lack of understatement was a statement in itself. Lead singer Paul Westerberg has spent the last two months reading about how sensitive he's become and how the Replacements are about to move into the rock'n'roll mainstream. Last night, Westerberg and the rest of the band (bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarist Slim Dunlap and drummer Chris Mars) thumbed their noses at the critics, opening with three of the group's most cynical tunes: "Color Me Impressed", "I Don't Know", and "I.O.U". By the time they dipped into "Don't Tell A Soul", it was the equally disaffected "Anywhere's Better Than Here", one of the harder-edged songs on the new record. The Replacements toured through much of their recent catalog last night, drawing heavily from both the "Tim" and "Pleased To Meet Me" albums, and coming up with a few pleasant surprises. The band played "Cruella De Ville", the Disney song it recorded for a compilation album last year, and dashed off an impromptu version of the nasty "Waitress In The Sky". The show was played out on a sparse stage with three mike stands and Mars' drum kit, which was surrounded by a wall of Marshall amps. It was short, loud and nasty, vintage Replacements without the drunken excesses of the past. Westerberg, who screamed above the din he and Dunlap created with their Gibson guitars, lost his voice within 15 minutes. After an hour of breakneck performance, he turned to Stinson and quipped: "What time is it? We're going down fast." But they played on, wrapping up the proceedings with their anthem "Bastards of Young". It appears the band of the 80's is ready for the 90's, and not to be undersold. --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1993 09:24 EDT From: HLC2@OAS.PSU.EDU (CHAKIRIS.HEATHER) Subject: What the f*ck you sayin'? Hey, Matt ... It was great to see the two latest issues waiting in my mailbox. Definitely a day brightener. Someone (I'm sorry, I can't remember who) said something about Johnette Napolitano a few issues back. (She sang with Paul on "My Little Problem.") I heard a story back when _All Shook Down_ was being made, but was never able to verify it. Maybe someone out there knows something. Johnette was in the studio in New York, recording "My Little Problem" with Paul. Apparently, from what I was told, she had some kind of a "little problem" with Paul and, at one point, went out to get a coffee -- and never came back. Has anybody else heard this? It's not an unlikely story, from what I've heard about Napolitano. Just curious. >>Slim concert in Philly Unfortunately, I called and removed myself from the guest list because a friend called and asked if he could spend his birthday weekend with me here in State College. From what I understand, though, Slim was bounced as Dramarama's opening act. Is that true? A friend of mine saw the band in New York City two nights before the Philly show, and Slim was nowhere to be found. >>Paul date Add October 20 in Cincinnati to your list of Paul dates. I'm kind of skeptical about the whole "exhaustion" thing regarding the cancellation of Paul's European tour. I wonder if maybe he was having trouble selling tickets, so they just decided to keep him in the States, where he's sure to sell out. Just a theory ... and it is mine. :-) --Heather --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- //\\// THE --SKYWAY-- RIDE BOARD \\//\\ HEY! A guy I know went to the Zuzu's release party last year in Minneapolis and was surprised to see Paul there, as I guess Paul doesn't go to those sort of uptown events. My friend didn't talk to Paul (he's not a big 'mats fan), but it was apparent what Mr. Westerberg's interests were at the party. Anyway, it's pretty cool that Paul's not branching out too from his Minnesota roots. -SC --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Subject: Westerberg, and more Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1993 15:39 +0100 (MET) From: REINOUT VERBEEK Yo Matt! How's it going. I thought I'd write you some stuff about the Westerberg show I saw last Friday in Utrecht. If you want to you can put it in the Skyway. We (me and a friend) got there a little early, cause I had to change my ticket, which was for the show that was planned 3 weeks ago, but was postponed, since Paul was somewhat tired after being on the road for a long time. Anyway, the time that was printed on my friend's ticket was wrong, so we had to wait for 2 hours until the show started. We didn't feel like sitting through the 2 opening acts, so we went to a coffee-shop to have a drink, and smoke a joint. When we came back (half an hour before the Paul would get on stage) it was still really quiet. There probably weren't more than a hundred people there. I heard some girl say that they'd only sold 84 tickets in advance. But, soon, more and more people came in, and by the time the band took the stage it was pretty crowded. I'm not too good when it comes to remembering songs after a concert, but luckily I managed to snatch one of the setlists after the show. I'm not sure if they played all the songs that are on the list, but in general it seems to be pretty accurate. It also sometimes doesn't have the entire name of the song, but just a word, but I trust you'll be able to figure it out (at least better than I am) - Waiting for Somebody - Buck Hill - Mannequin shop - Askin me Lies - Achin to be - Hold my Life - Glimmer - Daydream - Waitress - I'll be You - Dice - Can't Wait - Few Minutes - Alex - Merry Go Round - Down Love - Seein Her? - Regular - Sitt Yer Butt - Fad - I will Dare - Ansering - Silver - Knockin on mine - Valintine / I.O.U. - Skyway - Things The order seems to be OK, except for the last few songs, which were: Down Love Answering Machine (then, a song I didn't know) World Class Fad Here comes a regular. I'm not sure, but I think they also played some songs that weren't on the list, but I didn't know. For instance, after Merry Go Round, one of the guys who was tuning the guitars knocked over Paul's amp. It took them a while to get everything back the way it was, and in the meantime, the guitarplayer did a song, which seemed really familiar, but I couldn't quite place (part of the lyrics are "Let's all drink to the death of a clown"). After this little accident the amp seemed to be somewhat fucked up. It made a lot of noise, which, in between songs, seemed to bother Paul a lot. From time to time he'd bitch about the road crew and the guy handling the sound and stuff. One time this guy handed him the accoustic guitar (for Skyway) and it was really out of tune. Paul shook his head and said: "As a proffesional..... I can't accept this". Apart from these minor things he seemed to be in a pretty good mood. He wasn't too drunk (at least not in my opinion) and made some jokes towards the crowd, and the other band-members ("I'm sorry, but I can't play Unsatisfied. I'm a well adjusted person..."). I thought it sounded really good, and so did the rest of the crowd, who were really into it. So, everything went great, until the end of the first encore, when Paul got upset again about the noise his amp was making. Finally, after World Class Fad, he threw his guitar on stage, pushed over the amp, and walked off. This really came as a surprise to both the crowd and the other bandmembers, who for a while just stood there, waiting if he'd come back or not. Finally they too walked off, the lights went on, and the DJ put on a record. The crowd, however, did not agree with the way this had turned out, so we started yelling, and whistling and bangin on the stage. This continued for at least 5 minutes (I still can't believe how much noise this relatively small crowd made) and finally he came back and did Regular (people had been yelling for the song, since the beginning of the show), after which he thanked the crowd, gave some back-stage passes to some of the pretty girls standing at the front, and took off. They must have played for at least 2 hours, but it didn't seem long at all. This was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. I remember thinking before I went that it probably would be kind of a quiet show (compared to the Replacements stuff I'd seen on Matt's video tapes), with little interaction with the crowd, and stuff like that, but I guess I underestimated them. Well, that's it. Talk to you soon dude... Reinout. --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Sun, 03 Oct 1993 19:21:41 -0500 (cdt) From: the Walrus (Derek S Brown) Subject: Buck Hill I think that this was already covered, but here's my $0.02: Buck Hill is small ski hill in Burnsville, MN, a southern suburb of Minneapolis. It's not very big -- about 10-12 runs or so -- but it is much better than most of the other little bumps around the Twin Cities metro area. In fact, the vertical drop is a whopping 450' or so. 2 of the runs are fairly steep. The sucky part is that each run is over about 45 seconds. Anyway, the hill is regarded as okay for the Twin Cities area, even though it's always joked about. Some local schools train there, and the Twin Cities have produced a few decent, national class skiers that trained at Buck Hill. So while it's a joke, man-made, in the midst of suburbia, and extremely short, it's about as good as you can do near Minneapolis and St. Paul, save for "Afton Alps." Derek S. I also have that flexi-single, it was included (read: stapled to the front of) the Jan. or Feb. issue of THE BOB (those of you on the east coast probably know this magazine better than I, that 'Mats issue was the only one I ever bought, got it in Wash. DC when I was working there). The recording is the same one that appears on the INCONCERATED CD/LP. The issue included an interview with Westerberg, which I promptly lost by allowing someone borrow it. Another a different note, I just realized that I may own something of a collectors item that many of you may want to keep an eye out for: it's a CD version of "If Only You Were Lonely." It appears as a "secret song" on the end of a TWIN/TONE Catalog Sampler entitled "More Hits From Mid America." (It's got a picture of Harmon Killibrew on the cover, for you baseball buffs) In addition to "Kids Don't Follow" the disc includes songs from Soul Asylum, Jathawks, Robyn Hitchcock and more. After the final song, a less that good WEEN song (not a big fan of this "music") there is a pause and then "If Only You Were Lonely" kicks in. According to the definitive 'mats expert, Ric Dube, (way to put the pressure on, eh Ric?) this is the only CD version...any disagreements? Anyway, you may want to keep an eye out for it... Westerberg plays Seattle again on October 30 at the Moore Theatre. I'll be there...and hopefully I'll convince Dube to go too. I don't know if people will be interested, but all these great things will be happening just south of the cities, so if readers from the cities want to come down to Red Pets records in Northfield, they'd be more than welcome Hell, me and DRURYS will be there. -Seth Curley CURLEYS@carleton.edu --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Wed, 6 Oct 93 15:45:23 CDT From: lees@snoopy.asf.com (Lee Short) Subject: _Tim_ lyrics Matt Here's my take on the Lyrics posted for _Tim_. I think that's right anyway, others have confirmed it. thanks, Josh --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- fin.
