"Ain't much to rake anyway in the fall..." Ah, man, I am so tired. I got back at four A.M. last night from the Westerberg concert in Iowa City, IA (about a three hour drive from Kirksville.) But boy, it was worth it. But more on that later. In this issue, there's a note about the English (as in from England) Westerberg single that I picked up. I can't stress enough how awesome the live versions on it are. I heavily recommend going to your local record store and physically threaten the man behind the counter (with firearms, if necessary) for him/her to get off their duff and order a copy of this for you. These versions are far better than anything that I have on the 10+ hours of bootleg material that I have. If you ever need to turn somebody onto the 'Mats, this is the best doctrine I can think of. (And remember, if this is currently being read in a court of law, the physical threats were all in jest. It's just that, in my experience, record stores are less than helpful when it comes to ordering import material.) As for people in the Minneapolis area, my Spring Break dates are Friday March 5th till Sunday March 13th. Thanks to all who have send me letters sayin', "Hey...yeah! Come up and we'll go raise hell!" Hopefully this doesn't coincide with the Spring Breaks for Carleton and UMN (which means that you all could be out of town/state/country). Also, for anybody who ever commented on it, I just changed my .plan. (Not that Too Much Joy and Catcher in the Rye aren't two of my favorite things in the world; it's just that it had been up there for six months.) What's up there now is the lyrics to one of my fav Husker Du tunes. (A friend of mine just bought the actual CD so I finally have the complete lyrics for it.) Some might say that the words are more appropriate for four months ago, but I dunno... the song is more reflective than speaking from the moment. To all Husker Du fans, feel free to send me your own reactions...everybody has their own 'celebrated summer'... There's some more stuff coming soon to the list...like Seth Curley probably talkin' about how he interviewed Chris Mars this weekend (wow!). DISCOGRAPHY: I just updated it a little. If you want a new copy, just write me and I'll send it to you. REVISED TIM LYRICS: Mark Timmins has combined all the revisions of the original set of Tim lyrics from Scott Sochs (as well as his own) and has made a NEW COMPLETE version. Most of the blanks have been filled in (but still no definitive answer as to what the heck Paul's yelling at the end of "Bastards of Young".) IF YOU WANT THE NEW VERSION, just reply to this letter and I'll send it out to you ASAP. (This thing is beginning to resemble the complexity and insurrmountability of the human genome project!) See you next week (or shortly thereafter...) Love, Matt (M@) --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Sunday, October 17th, 1993 16:20:27 CST From: i261%nemomus@academic.nemostate.edu (Matthew Tomich) Iowa City, Iowa. Sometimes I wonder how things would've turned out if I would've ended up at this school of 32,000 in the middle of the agricultural wastes of Western Iowa. Typical midwestern college town: tons of bars, campus buses every 15 minutes that'll haul you all over town, great record stores, and a PedMall with an active nightlife until at least 3 a.m. My guess is that I would've been too busy socializing and strolling to run the //Skyway\\. Everything has its own ends. The five of us stuffed in a car made for four. (I would've driven, but this guy had a better car stereo and three hours is a long time in an overstuffed car.) It was comfy nonetheless. We had a bullhorn that I acquired along the way (about three years ago) to keep us happy. (We relayed our comments to the surrounding area whenever we passed through a town. We had a nice 15 second political conversation at a red light in some small town in Iowa where the Republican party was founded. I don't think I'll ever count on a Republican for hospitality again. No offense to anyway political Skywayers out there, if any.) We spent the Friday night at the Mayflower dorm on the second and fourth floors. (Two friends of mine, Corey and Lauren, let my friends and I sack in their rooms.) We got to bed about 7:30 a.m. after narrowly missing a brawl with the drunken frat boys in an adjacent room at about 4:30 a.m. and Lauren's drunk suitemates attempting to coerce our two Dutch pals to spend the night with them. ("I LOVE your accent!") After a dazeful waking on Saturday and breakfast at 3:30 p.m. at the local Rocky Roccoco's (best breadsticks in the world: $1.25 with tax), we were notified by phone that I had won a pair of Westerberg concert tickets. (The night before, we had found our way to a local record store, The Apollo. (Two members of Head Candy work there. These guys are great, at least when I saw them two years ago.) I had absentmindedly entered a drawing for the free tickets there.) Anyways, we went to go pick them up and the guy behind the counter said that the guy who had won the other pair wasn't going to pick them up so he gave those to us too. So we had ten tickets for seven people. (One of the people in our group hadn't planned on attending the concert; he was just along for the ride...so we gave him one.) We went back to the Mayflower dorm and screwed around with the video games and the pool table in the rec room. (I tried to get on the computer to see if Sharron Drury and Seth Curley were coming, but it wouldn't let me telnet without an account. I later found somebody in the Student Union building's computer room that let me borrow an account 5 minutes before Walt Mink started and I found out that they weren't going to be able to make it. Shame too, because they would've gotten in for free!) Anyways, I put on some of my friend Corey's clothes (he's 5'10", I'm 5'4") after I had an experience in the mud and was so stuptified by how big they fit that I borrowed Corey's skateboard, Lauren's Converse hightops, and her red flannel hat and went out to the back parking lot of Mayflower and took some poseur skate punk pictures. (We threw the skateboard in the air and I jumped and Lauren took a picture, so hopefully it'll look like some cool picture that I can jokingly send to Thrasher magazine. Or it'll look like two idiots with a skateboard and a camera.) Eventually, somehow, it eventually turned into 7:00 p.m. The show started at 8, so we hopped the Cambus down to the Student Union and my friends and I sat outside attempting to give away these three free tickets. Well, it was homecoming weekend and there had already been two other big concerts in the past two weeks (Smashing Pumpkins and Primus), so there were several other people outside who were trying to get rid of their tickets (because they or their would-be date found a party or something else more important to go to. I dunno. I don't understand.) They were selling them from anywhere from $15 bucks ("I'm trying to break even") to $5 ("I gotta hurry up and go get drunk before it gets any later.") Two of these people, upon hearing "FREE!" after declaring their offers to passerbys, said, "Dude, no way...I can't compete...here's my tickets. Give them to somebody." So I ended up with ->5<- free Westerberg tickets to give away. (See, maybe I could've made a fortune here, but I felt like I didn't pay anything for these tickets, so it wouldn't be too cool to hock them and make a profit from somebody's generosity.) Well, then, I'm sitting on this lamp thingie in front of the joint (it was warm, and my butt was cold, because it's Iowa in October and I'm wearing shorts (they're red) because the temperature in these concerts tends to get obnoxious) and a familiar face walking up the steps. It's none other than the blond woman from Arizona that I met at the show in Omaha! She had just gotten off the bus from taking a plane from Tuscon to Cedar Rapids IA that morning. This time, I found out (and remembered) her name ("Carrie/Keri/Kerrie/et al.") She recognized me and was very surprised, to say the least. Somehow, it wasn't surprising to see her there. She had seen five shows on the last tour, flying around from show to show. (It helps when you work for the airline.) Anyways, she had found out about the show the night before and had decided to catch it. I gave her a ticket (she didn't have one yet) and I was left with four. I gave one of the four to a man who wanted some girl he just met to go (hee hee), and another to a friend of mine from high school who I had no idea went to University of Iowa. It seemed like Replacements fans were a conscientious bunch who knew to buy their tickets BEFOREHAND before it was sold out (which it wasn't), so nobody was askin' for extras. That, and, (this really kinda bummed me out), people thought that it was some kind of scam that somebody was giving away free tickets. Oh well. Ironically, the two extra tickets ended up to the two guys from the record store where I had won them! The University of Iowa Student Activities Board, in their preparation for the show, had forgotten to put them on the guest list. They were extremely grateful, but it was some pretty heavy irony. Walk Mink opened up. It seemed like they were a great band (at least had the potential to), but the soundman needed to be strung up and lynched. It was a really, really muddy mix...daresay, one of the worst I've heard at a "professional" (non-local) show. It got a little better for Westerberg, but it didn't touch the other two times I saw him (in Omaha and St. Louis). However, Paul was on par. Despite the large stage and the ballroom surroundings (it wasn't exactly as intimate as the previous shows), the band seemed with it and together. It was hard to hear the comments between songs (Paul mumbled and the sound wasn't great), but the emotion was there. [TO BASS PLAYERS OUT THERE: His bassist wasn't using his SVT this time...he was using his backup GK. When I got the chance to talk to him in Omaha, he said that the SVT sometimes performs its customary "I don't wanna work today" and putzs out. Even though everybody seems to think GK is hot shit (especially funk players), the bass sounded alot warmer and more in tune with the mix than with the 'clanky' GK head. He still has his 8 x 10" cabinet setup, tho'. Anybody know what Stinson used? There's a GK 800 in the "I'll Be You" video, but he's got an old Ampeg SVT in the "Sorry Ma" shots (along with his Fender Mustang...must've been great for his 14-year old hands with the short-scale neck.) Of course, recently I've seen him use a Fender Precision (probably from the factory, so it's stock...anybody seen a Badass bridge or heard about new pickups (Seymour Duncans?) Or what was customized on that green Rickenbacker he had?)] I didn't run into Scott Sochs. Or maybe I did. Maybe he was the drunk asshole in the second row that kept elbowing me in the face so I'd get out of his way. (Thanks bastard.) I never said a word to him so I never got to know his name. But it probably wasn't Scott. So maybe I'll see you next time, Scott. As for a song list, here's what I remember: Opened with "Waiting for Somebody", then "Maniquin Shop", then "Hold My Life". As for the song order, that's where I stop, but I remember: Buck Hill (which Paul (mistakenly?) introduced as from their first album), (P.S. complete with that long drawn out "ahhhhh...." after the second "Buck Hill" shout), Achin' To Be, Knockin' On Mine, (the second song on 14 Songs, the title escapes me now because I'm tired and hungry), World Class Fad, Few Minutes of Silence, Things, I Will Dare (which at the end he spend up to obnoxiously fast), Waitress in the Sky, Alex Chilton (final song), choice between Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular (played Regular, second to last song), I'll Be You (last song before encore), I.O.U. (final final song), Seein' Her (the song off the single for "World Class Fad"). No more come to memory...maybe Scott'll know. (Oh yeah, Skyway too.) (I say mistakenly in regards to Buck Hill because I know that Paul isn't too fond of the first two albums before Hootennanny.) Missing from the list from last time I saw them was: Daydream Believer, If Only You Were Lonely, Runaway Wind, Left of the Dial (I figure he did "Hold My Life" instead), Down Love, some others I can't remember. Paul seemed in good health and having fun. =) Oh yeah, Kerri (or however she spells it) said that Paul had asked her if she knew anything about this "underground grass-roots" (that's a quote) newsletter that had been circulating. She didn't know (until I asked her if she had a computer account at work) that I ran it. This was after the show in Austin, so Asif and Teddie and everybody else who told Paul about the Skyway, thanks! He's now aware of it (or at least he was aware of it that day.) That's all I can think of to say. It's just hitting me now how many coincidences occured during the trip with meeting people and stuff. But it was a hell of time. I'm glad I went on vacation. The song is the album version, but on it are live versions from the Whisky A-Go Go in Hollywood California from July 1993. The versions of CAN'T HARDLY WAIT, LEFT OF THE DIAL, and ANOTHER GIRL ANOTHER PLANET are just amazing. Energetic. I've shot my eardrums blasting it already. Here's the catalog numbers from the spine of the CD if this helps your local record store to try and get ahold of it: WO 209CD1 9362-41123-2 World Class Fad It's imported from England, according to the sticker that's attached to it. I picked it up for $10 (two friends of mine got theirs at the Apollo for $9.95. So it seems to be the going price.) Even better, in my opinion, than that single with "Seein' Her" on it (which is also GREAT.) At this rate, Paul could release a box set of unreleased stuff by the end of the year! ;) -- M@ --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Mon, 11 Oct 93 18:16:19 EST From: "I'M ON THE BOTTOM, AND I'M NOT AFRAID" The Disney album that "Cruella DeVille" shows up on is called "Stay Awake: Interpretations of Songs From Vintage Disney Films" chris --===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===---===-- Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1993 15:38:35 -0400 From: timmins@polysci.umass.edu Hi, Matt: I still have yet to hear from anyone concerning this compilation tape idea. Perhaps people are under the misapprehension that we want bands who are signed to labels and the like. I know your band has put out an indie tape (yes?) but I think we should make it known that we'll welcome anything people want to submit. No sound quality threshold, no studio-quality production necessary. This is the Replacements' mailing list after all -- not Lloyd Cole's!!!! My own "band," for in- stance will submit songs we recorded on a friend's four track, although songs recorded on a boombox by readers who are drunk off their asses playing in the kitchen (in the true Paul Westerberg spirit) are also welcome. Hell, recordings of organ music are fine.
