Wasn't it this time last year that _14 Songs_ came out? The feel of summer late at night really brings back memories of it being 4 AM and laying in my bed sweating to death listening to "Runaway Wind"...or sitting in the parking lot of the Ranch Bowl after the Westerberg show until 2 AM talking to strangers and trying to find the urge to go home, or just go anywhere... I've been spending my time doing library research, observing peromyscus leucopus (read: deer mice), cleaning cages, swimming in an abandon rock quarry, riding my mountain bike around the deserted town at 2 a.m., writing grant proposals, and living on my own domestically for the first time. But feel free to stop by if you're in the area! MINNESOTA PEOPLE, ET AL.: Hey, guess what...on a short notice, I'll be in Minneapolis next Tuesday through Thursday (June 21st - 23rd) with a Chinese diplomat/ scholar from my school. What this means is that I'll be at the Superchunk show at First Avenue on Wednesday the 22nd! (Wu Wei, however, in his late fifties, politely declined my invitation.) It's an all ages show and is somewhere between $6-8...and they put on a hell of a show! If you like short people jumping around with big, loud guitars, this is your deal. To be easy to find, I'll wear red soccer shorts, black Converse hightops, and a plain white t-shirt. I'm about 5'5", 130 lbs, medium brown hair, and probably won't be at the bar. Come up and say hi and get crushed in the front with me! (If you're going to be there, drop me a line or call me at (816)-665-4749 (go ahead, call after 11 p.m...I usually hit the sack at 1:30 a.m.)) Hopefully see some of you real soon! If anybody wants to design a really cool header for the //Skyway\\, feel free and drop it in my mailbox! (You'll be credited every issue, too...gee, neat!) Oh yeah, for the really observant: the last issue what #14 and now this is issue #20...what happened?!! Well, this is what happened. I remembered the issues. When I went back to school late last August 1993, I started renumbering the issues (with something like "Slavery in School Issue #1"). Well, when I tried to count the issues, this started lots of confusion. Especially when I thought of the prospect of starting over the numbering system again in the fall...and then wondering what would happen once I got out of school. So I went back and edited the files and renumbered them. So officially, this is the 20th issue of the //Skyway\\, not including its earlier days in March 1993 when the list was more of a mail-forwarding type of system. (The chronicles of those days can be found in the "Best of the Skyway #1", which you can get by request from this address or by gopher-ing to phoenix.creighton.edu.) So anyways, for your useless reference, or in case you missed a few, here's a list of the past //Skyway\\ issues. (You can get the older ones in the same manner mentioned above. The gopher, last time I checked, had issues up to January of 1994, but will probably be updated soon.) I asked him to sign my best kissers song list and he gladly obliged. That's kindness for you. I had just seen him 2 weeks before that when he performed at McCabe's guitar shop. So i chatted with him, then exchanged good byes. I also met slim dunlap at an instore 5 minutes away from my house. There weren't many people there because the event wasn't highly publicized but i got to talk to him after his set and he was so kind. This has to be one of the nicest people i've ever met. He even thanked me for buying his CD and everything. I've never met Paul though, the closest is when i saw him at the whiskey in july. I stood front row in awe of the man. I wrote a letter to the editor in bam magazin (l.a. mag) and it got published. They titled it Children by the millions. Date: Fri, 10 Jun 1994 10:57:18 -0700 (PDT) i saw tommy perform at McCabes guitar shop in late november. He did some acoustic tunes, including some flaming lips covers and big star covers as well. He also sang sattelite and the partridge family song. He did do some new material too. A song, i can't remember the name, he had just written it actually. He did songs off friday night. He also performed at Jack's sugar shack in L.a. on tuesday but i couldn't make it. I'm sure he'll be playing around town. He frequents the whiskey a go go in Hollywood quite often. I'll send the letter asap. Tommy asked my friend what he wanted to hear and he said he wanted tommy and the boys to do Chatter box by the New York Dolls. They gladly obliged and invited him on stage. If anyone ever has a chance to interview Paul or knows someone who might, *please* ask him about this--I'd love to know the story. Although the founding members of King Alcohol (whose name comes from a nineteenth century health primer published by the Women's Christian Temperance Union) have known each other since the 2nd grade, it wasn't until each had managed his way through college and once again into the unreal world of their hometwon of Pittsfield, MA, that they began to collaborate musically. The very first jam session was held over (many, cheap) beers and under the excuse of sending a tape to an old friend anchored down in Tokyo. Brennan claimed to know a few Replacement songs, so boozy off-key renditions of "Here Comes a Regular" and "The Ledge" - with Brennan on guitar, Graham on vocals, and Timmins on newspaper and cutlery percussion - were sent off to Japan. That was 1989, the year during which King Alcohol proclaimed themselves the band to define the 90s, further defacing the walls of an Albany, NY, punk rock establishment with this sentiment. Although several 'albums' were recorded over then next few years, it wasn't until about 1992 that any of the other members could accurately be described as having more than the slightest clue how to play a real instrument. With Timmins now pounding real drums (instead of cases of hastily emptied beer bottles), and Graham having learned to play both guitar and bass (Brennan had moved to Seattle to give (other?) underemployed GrungeBoys massage therapy), the two remaining founding members have carried on, in collaboration with whomever else might be on hand, rerecording many of the bands early gems-in- the-rough. Three such cuts are here featured. She is a student of computing systems, who has been playing the guitar for going on five years now. She was always into pop music, but only recently has she discovered what she calls 'good' music - The Replacements (naturally), Crash Vegas, Concrete Blonde, Daniel Lanois, etc. She claims to be influenced lyrically by intangible, depressing thoughts, and thus writes when she is down. Because she records her confessional songs solo acoustic, she feels they come out with an overtly 'folky' flair. However, she swears there is a punk priestess within, just waiting for the chance to play with an electric band and to burst out and take the world by storm. They had been practicing in an old abandoned hotel near a railroad track until a lot of their shit got stolen. You know, there's a fine line between Tom Waits and Jimmy Buffett. The Petting Zoo is a cross-cultural amalgamation of stereotypical male behavioral patterns as typified by many cultures. As a band, they have set out to exploit these behaviors and make them as neat as possible. They use tribal rhythms of several sub-populations and emotional, didactic lyrics in a montage effect to dazzle those who know nothing of real musical talent. They have obviously studied just enough ethnomusicology to be dangerous. "Little Red Light" is like "Lola" without the transvestite part. "Kid So Blue" basically says all my friends are assholes. "My Place" is a true story except for the part about talking to the girl. But as members and accomplices were rounded up, things, for better or worse, became semi-permanent under the name "Spandex Handjob". They played their first show in August 1992 in Omaha NE under "TheCatheters" after plastering the city with flyers that they were from the U.K. The show drew (suckered?) over 200 people, but in poetic foreshadowing, the show was broken up fifteen minutes into their set by the police in violation of the civic noise curfew at midnight. After censorship in Omaha and at some university shows over their name, they switched their moniker to the idea of an Irish pope with a 40-oz.'er in hand, "Pope Mahone". Currently, the band members live in four different states but find enough gas money to make it to shows across the Midwest, from a rave to the Churdan, Iowa (pop: 500) "Appreciation Days" county fair to the now-defunct purveyour of punk, "Veg's Haus". "Sub Pop Boy" is a semi-biographical song about a stereotypical Seattle neophyte that worked at Omaha's Henry Dorley Zoo. "Stick it to the Man" is about the Omaha fundamentalist group Omahans for Decency and their leader, city councilman Steve Exon, as well as the band's experiment with all but four of their shows in 1993 being busted by the cops. (Ironically, one of the two was down the street from a state trooper's house.) Both of these were recorded in the summer of 1993 on a four track and are available with eight other songs from their Landphil records album "A Spandex Handjob Christmas", which is available for $4 postpaid from the postal address above or landphil@phoenix.creighton.edu. Their proclivity toward instrumentals notwithstanding, the band also offer up a rendition of the Daniel Johnston classic "Walking the Cow," featuring Jenifer Sanders on vocals. Opportunity, and the fact that it got to 105 yesterday. Anyways, that's not why I'm writing--I wanted to share an unpublished review of the Big Star show I saw in San Francisco. Kudos to Manny Diez--my guitar god drinking buddy of the Miss Alans (whose record _Blusher_ you should all run out and buy right now)--who got me into the show in the first place and drove, to boot! And those of you who have P$ or AOL might have already read this (Kathy, Diego, Ranjit, Scott COME ON DOWN!!!), so you have my permission to skip it . . . [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Like a lot of things which happened during the gestation of what is now called "alternative" music, the cult that developed around Big Star happened gradually, albeit simultaneously, in several different locations. For twenty years, people who actually got to hear their music did whatever they could to get others to hear it. Writers wrote about it, musicians covered it, and college DJ's put it out on late-night shows. So when Big Star played to a packed house last night at the Fillmore in San Francisco, it was more than an exercise in nostalgia, like the Eagles and Stones tours certainly are. Nostalgia for what? When Wolfman Jack was blasting "September Gurls" out twice an hour? When the cover band at our high school prom played "The Ballad of El Goodo" for the last slow dance? There never was a time when we were all galvanized by Big Star's music. It conquered us one person at a time. Thus, rather than a nostalgia trip, this Big Star concert felt more like the Velvet Underground shows must have felt like: a public celebration of hitherto private obsessions. Of course, it was a harder road for Big Star: the myth-making machinery around the Velvets practically preceded the group. And between Lou Reed's early solo success and continual high profile (and the endless sucession of covers of "Sweet Jane"), its been going ever since. By now, even the most casual rock fan must have at least heard of the Velvets. Not so with Big Star. So while when Paul Westerberg penned "I never travel too far/Without a little Big Star" there was that me too! for some of us, a great many more said who? And while that song no doubt inspired many people to find the records, in 1987 the Replacements weren't exactly household names, so the song didn't exactly inspire Chilton-mania. So it was into this confused legacy a alternately bemused and touched Alex Chilton strode last night. Obviously bemused that a band and idea he abandoned two decades ago could sell out a large hall, and obviously touched with the enthusiastic reception because after the show he went down on the floor to talk and sign autographs. It almost goes without saying that the crowd loved every minute. And why not? With orginal Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and moonlighting Posies Jonathan Auer and Ken Stringfellow, Chilton confronted the Big Star legend head on with a set of tough, biting rock and roll. While it was essentially the same set captured on last year's _Columbia_ album, it was rawer and more powerful. Loose and playful, too--whether it was Chilton stretching out the solo on "When My Baby's Beside Me" or the entire band kicking in on "Daisy Glaze," they didn't even bother aiming for the perfection of the orginal recordings, going instead to the heart of the songs. So while the live take on, say, "Feel," didn't have the loveliness of the orginal recording, this version--powered by Jody Stephens and led by Ken Stringfellow's vocals-- worked on a completely different level. Of course, Big Star was always more than Alex Chilton, so Jody Stephens sang his lovely "For You" and Andy Hummel's "Way Out West" and Jonathan Auer took his turn on Big Star founder Chris Bell's transcendent "I Am The Cosmos." By including the title track from Chris Bell's posthumous solo album they were tacitly acknowledging it is every bit as essential to the Big Star legacy as _Sister Lovers_. Whether this show signals the start of a renewed interest in pop songs on Chilton's part, or the latest in a series of one-offs under the Big Star rubric, the intensity with which he attacked his past made it worthwhile. [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] I know it seems like a no-brainer to send it to that Big Star deal, and I might--I also know they'll already have a review, so what would be the point.
