Since the issue before this came out on June 19th, this is our one year anniversary issue! In the space of a year, we've seen three tours (Paul, Tommy, and Slim), albums from all the members ('cept Bob, who is reportedly in the studio with the Bleeding Hearts), and one address change. And we've got 287 subscribers. Uh, this sorta sounds like some kinda business report at a stockholders meeting, so I'll shut up now. Hey, you know that Bob guy that's responsible for all the technical stuff on this list? HE GOT MARRIED! All eligible bachelors out there give a sigh of relief now that Bob is off the beach. The wedding was indeed the most raunchous affair I've ever seen of its sort. The first dance turned into a full blown boogie and the food was damn good. What more could you ask for? Send congrats to rfulk@phoenix.creighton.edu. The Superchunk concert in Minneapolis was a highlight in my impending hearing loss, but even more spectacular was the town...man, that joint is BEAUTIFUL. When visiting, be sure to check out Lake of the Isles and Minnehaha Falls. Not to mention all the 'Mats sites such as Jokefolkoaropus (did I get that right?...I know it's some combination of those four words) record store, First Avenue and the Seventh Street Entry, et al. Also, a friend introduced me to Dee Dee Dunlap, the eighteen year old daughter of Slim. Dad's old band is, "Pretty good, but not like my favorite in the world or anything." Ahh, spoiled brat. Some people just don't know how good they have it. Any update for that Swingin' Party '94? I don't have access to AOL so I'm not able to see what's been happenin'...any congregation sites or estimation of numbers who are going to make it? Anybody who doesn't already have it, grab your mitts on the CD bootleg "Lucky's Revenge". It really does capture a primo Westerberg show at the second night of the Whiskey A-Go Go in L.A. (The extra tracks of the U.K. import of "World Class Fad" has three tracks from the first night of the two shows.) One of my current roommates was at both of these shows and atests that they were the best of the five times that he caught Paul. Not to mention the sound quality: straight from the soundboard...this could've been released as a live album by the record company easily. Probably the best sounding bootleg I've ever heard, aside from radio broadcasts (which have loads of compression). Oh man, I got my copy of "The Fans Hit Back" compliation tape of bands from the //Skyway\\ from Mark Timmins and it is seriously GOOD. It really kicked my expectations. There's definitely something on here for everybody: early 80's pop, power chord rock, folk, rap, country- influenced, goofy and funny, and even an R.E.M. cover. I didn't know there was so much talent out there on this list. To get information about getting your own copy, write to Mark at: timmins@polysci.umass.edu. And Mark Fisher is still compiling everybody's "Top Ten Favorite Albums of All Time" from people from the //Skyway\\. Just send your own to him at fisher@ns.case.org. The results will be released in a special mailing from this address. By next issue, you'll be able to subscribe to the Skyway through a listserver. But THE SKYWAY IS NOT BECOMING A MAIL DEFLECTOR-TYPE LIST. It's just an easy and simple way for people to subscribe if they want to. And I'll happily still subscribe people manually who hate sending non-sensical messages to automated computer programs. The issues will be sent out through the listserver program, but that's just because it will take alot less load on the computer system and will be much faster. You'll also be able to use it to ask for an info file about the list, unsubscribe, and get text files (lyrics, discography, etc.) However, as promised, if you hate listserver thingies, just write to me and I can happily do all of this stuff manually for yah. But the digests will still be the same ol' thing...so no panic... Oh yeah, and I got this letter in the mail the other day: "Dear Matthew, Well, I hope this letter gets to 'ya. I have been reading //Skyway\\ off of a printout that a fellow 'Mats buddy gave me. Wow, do I ever need a computer. No, I don't have one right now. I user Compuserve 3 years ago but back then none of those people ever talked 'Mats talk. Anyway, I don't even have access to one as of now either, but I thought I'd write you a letter. I was frothing at the mouth reading //Skyway\\. I have been a fanatic 'Mats guy for 4 years and have been developing various contacts to purchase live shows and old vinyl over the past two years. I have many of their outtakes but Charles Ford's little article really opened my eyes to what's out there. I am constantly trying to broaden my tape collection circle. Even though I can't really contribute properly to SKYWAY, I'll let you know my 'Mats story: I listened to the 'Mats first in '87. A roommate of mine in college listened to them constantly. I was basically passe' about it at the time because I was really into the Cure at that point. I graduated in '91 and moved to Minneapolis. Catharsis came there and I became a nutcase about those guys. (Met Bob Stinson walking outside in the frigid cold. Went to bars like the CC Club hoping to see them. Saw Bob's new band open for Bash n' Pop at the 7th St. Entry. Blah, blah, on and on.) I have a white collar job where no one revels in the 'Mats. So I roam the country via letter meeting you people, trying to collect all their preserved memory. I don't think they have a "best" record although "Tim", "Let It Be", and "Pleased..." stand out. I think that "All Shook Down" is their _weakest by far_ and "Sorry Ma" is basically shit with diamonds in it. Favorite songs: 1. Unsatisfied 2. I Will Dare 3. Nevermind 4. I'll Be You 5. Color Me Impressed 6. Left of the Dial 7. Here Comes a Regular 8. Hold My Life 9. Can't Hardly Wait 10. Alex Chilton 11. Within Your Reach I have a _big_ favor to ask. I am trying to develop a U.S. mailing list of tape traders. Anyone who has live tapes, CDs, old 'Mats vinyl that they'll part with, videos, etc...send me their list of "haves" and "wants". Finally, I don't know if you know of _Goldmine_'s big profile on the 'Mats last summer. It is about 10-12 pages typed. It is the best history article I have seen. _Required reading_. Well, I gotta get back to work. I will try sometime to get to you via e-mail but it will be awhile I'm sure. Thanks for your contribution to SKYWAY. Can't hardly wait to hear from you. Please drop me a line. John Davidson 1134 Pinhurst Drive Atlanta GA 30339 (404)-436-2795" Well, John is pretty adamant about wanting to trade with people out there, so feel free to call him or drop him a letter with your list... Hey, everyone. I just discovered the list, so here I am, ecstatic to find I'm not alone. :D Well, I'll give you all some b/g info on me.. I'm 19, live in the dead center (pun intended) of Indiana (Kokomo, IN), and attend Ivy Tech State College. I'm also a musician, a writer, and a stand-up/sketch comedian. (I play guitar, bass, minimal drums, and I also sing, if anyone's really interested. :D) I first discovered the 'Mats about 4 years ago, at a Kokomo record store. I found *Sorry, Ma* on cassette for $10. I'd only heard of the Replacements before, but since I was getting into the loud/fast rules end of music, and the song titles were enough to convince me to pay the most worthwhile $10 I've ever spent. Since then, I've accumulated all of the Twin/Tone releases (except *Shit Hits the Fans*, which I *desperately* want), and all the Sire releases (except *Boink!*, which I also desperately want). I don't really have a favorite album or song, but I do tend to listen to the first five albums more often than the last three. I guess I just like the Bob atmosphere.. I've rattled on enough, I suppose. I'd like to conclude by asking whether anyone has a lyric file (or a file full of educated guesses) for any of the Twin/Tone releases, especially *Sorry Ma* and *Stink*. At any rate, I look forward to communicating with fellow 'Mats fans. =========================================================================== Bill and Ted's Excellent BBS (317) 883-4510 Russiaville, Indiana USA =========================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 6 Jul 1994 19:51:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Kevin Curry Subject: Paul on SNL and the Compilation So, I'm over at Ric Dube's house for a little Chicken and Pasta dinner so eloquently prepared by his girlfriend and all around nice gal Karen, when I happen to mention to him that I thought the camera angles and cuts were different on the re-broadcast of the Westerberg episode of SNL. I tell him, of course, that I failed to tape the re-broadcast...but guess who did. Yes Mr. Dube. So, we dig out both tapes, put them in at the same time (two seperate VCR's mind you, this kid's a pro you know) and BINGO, I was correct. In fact, in the re-broadcast it is more obvious that the drummer is the one who yells BURT REYNOLDS, because Paul turns around and laughs at him. And now my friend Carolyn, a budding Replacements fan who was also at the glorious dinner and witnessed the entire spectacle of Ric and I timing each VCR to the exact point and excitedly noting the different camera angles, thinks we are entirely to obessed with the 'Mats and Mr. Westerberg. Color Me Obsessed. Now about the compilation. The Fans Hit Back is an excellent collection from various genres of music that proves that 'Mats fans are incredibly talented and witty and play damn good music. This is an unsolicited plug that has nothing to do with the fact that my band appears on it. It's EXCELLENT, get it today! Kudos to Mr. Timmins for the hard work. Hi, Matt! A friend of mine who lives in Athens, GA, called me last night with a rumor she heard on 99X out of Atlanta. She said that they said (that he said that ... ) Brother Slim intends to reform a new band under The Replacements name, then tour. I am *really* skeptical about this for a few reasons: (1) I would like to think that Paul -- or someone -- was smart enough to get the rights to the band's name; (2) Slim can't be stupid enough to think this would actually be successful. Have you -- or anyone else -- heard anything about this? I'd hate to see my respect for Slim put in the crapper. I'm disillusioned enough these days. The pathway I used may not be the shortest, but to me it makes the most sense. Starting from the Home Gopher at UW-Madison, I clicked onto icons in the following order: Other Information Sources and Gophers World Wide Gopher Servers North America USA Nebraska Creighton University Other Internet Connections Creighton's Math and Computer Science Department (PHOENIX) Electronic.Journals.and.Mailing.Lists Electronic.Mailing.Lists The.Skyway Basically, the only non-obvious part of the path is that one must go to "Other Internet Connections" after getting to the Creighton University Gopher, which I at first took to be a pathway away from The Skyway, not towards. The first icon, "Other Information Sources and Gophers" is specific to the UW-Madison Home Gopher, although most other Mac home gophers contain an icon with similar wording. Maybe a generalized version of this path should start with "World Wide Gopher Servers." Hope you find this information useful! We have new contender, 101.9. It bills itself as Adult Alternative. While it skews closer to adult than alternative (looking for aging baby boom market) they have found in it their hearts to play Westerberg and the Mats. There is joy in Quakeville! KROQ occassionally will honor us with a mats song but you have to do penance with the likes of (Oingo) Boingo, Depeche Mode and (gasp!) Missing Persons, Berlin and bunch of other stuff that sucked 10 years ago and still sucks. 101.9 plays way too much Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor etc but I've also heard Uncle Tupelo, Grant Lee Buffalo, Billy Bragg, World Party and so on. It isn't great and I hesitate to give them my heart since everytime I commit myself the station is uncerimoniously dumped within a few months. Here's to the morsels of Westerberg and the Replacements they have already thrown my way. May they toss many more and limit the James Taylor. Cheers Jeff Weiss JeffWDTP@aol.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 04 Jul 1994 14:32:27 EDT From: MR STEPHEN R RENNE Subject: How young are you..How old am I... Greetings to all, As a recent subscriber I am writing not so much to tell my story but rather to enquire as to how many (if any) other 'Mats fanatics are out there who share with me a similar demographic/psychodramatic profile. I'm the guy who looks slightly out of place rummaging through the Alternative bins at the used CD store or sampling the unauthorized live tapes of the 'Mats, Husker Du, Mission of Burma, Lemonheads or some other such band at the local record show. Why out of place? Probably because I look like your father. Balding, weak abdominals, 40+ish, with apparel more appropriate for the Dead bins. But don't judge a book..... My story begins in a small upstairs bedroom in Rockford, Illinois circa 1964. Having been tucked in by mom I wait a reasonable length of time to make sure the folks have been properly sedated by three network television before I begin my quest. Turning the AM radio dial until I find WLS out of Chicago I wait patiently through Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five and other drivel until I hear it - the twangy guitar intro of "The Last Time" by the Stones. I am transfixed and carried to another dimension. Struggling through my high school years during the rest of the sixties I focus on mainly blues-based rock until the seventies arrive and the music no longer matters. I begin listening to avant-garde jazz from the sixties and before (Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Art Ensemble of Chicago) to satisfy my needs. Graduated from college and in the real world (Elementary School Teacher) I find myself roaming through a sixties rack at a used record store and once again have a religious experience when something called "London's Calling" came blaring through the store's system. The music was back! (I always catch on about two or three albums too late) Scarfing up everything I could by the Clash, Elvis Costello, Sex Pistols, and others from that era, I enjoyed another five or six years of quality music until it succumbed to the same forces as the sixties bands. At this point I had not even heard of the Replacements until a friend from my high school days now living in Arizona advised me to give them a listen. Taking a chance I purchased a cassette of Pleased to Meet Me along with a bunch of REM, some bootlegged Hendrix and Dylan, and assorted retro bands. Absentmindedly popping the 'Mats tape into the car deck, the first chords of "IOU" enveloped the interior of the auto with a strange aura. When "Alex Chilton" came on I was (again) in a Zen state. I wasn't sure if I would make it home. As soon as I could, I picked up the next tape by the Replacements I could find (Let It Be) and my life was changed. Since that day I have amassed a fairly impressive collection (thanks to my friends on Prodigy and the Internet) of live tapes, outtakes, B-sides and other stuff by the Replacements. I have also developed a strange affinity for Minnesota bands (Husker Du, Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Arcwelder, Soul Asylum, etc.) My theory on this has to do with climatology, electromagnetic fields, and the Lubavitchers but that is another story. That's the rumpus. My life has been significantly changed by music three times-"The Last Time" (still hits me in a strange way when I hear it), the Clash (does anyone else subscribe to the theory that "Sandinista" was the "White Album" of punk?), and the 'Mats. I am now listening to "On the Bus" from Dingwalls, London, 5-16-86, and there are few things more perfect in life than this. Mid-life crisis you say? Perhaps. No matter. I'll take it for whatever it is. What pisses me off about so many others in my generation who once shared the musical tastes of my youth is that they have forsaken the purpose of the music for a reactionary value they extend into other forms of culture and politics. They alternate between the oldies channel, Elton John, and Rush Limbaugh. Go out and buy "Stink" and a book by Noam Chomsky and see the light. I did. So how about it? Any other fat bald guys out there who share a love for the Replacements and similar musics? I'd love to hear from you or bump into you at a record show or share some intellectual chowder electronically or otherwise. Tell me I'm not alone!
