Assuming that I make it out of banana-boat heaven, I'll be back sometime between July 1st and August 2nd. But while I'm gone, the Skyway will continue. Feel free to send stuff to this address. That last semester at college really laid me out hard. Talk about burn out...I think I flushed my GPA down the toilet thanks to my "let's cram it all in during the last semester" semester. But in August, assuming all goes well and the Spanish teacher in Costa Rica doesn't have a feverent dislike of short punk ass Americans, I'll be graduating. When the Uncle Tupelo-derived band Wilco played at Mississippi Nights, somebody in the audience yelled out to Jeff Tweedy, "Seen your video!" in regards to their video "Box Full of Letters" on 120 Minutes. Tweedy's response: "It's phony rock n' roll!" Replacements allusion aside, it was the best concert I've seen this year. If Wilco comes to your town, go see 'em! I have no cool stories of my own, just my friends tales to be jealous of. My only claim to fame is that I got into the Mats in the reverse order of most Mat/Big Star fans. I had been a fan of Alex and co. before I ever really knew how the Mats were. I got into the Mats about two years ago, but didn't get seriously into them until about a year later. IMHO, they are simply the greatest rock band ever. I have a couple of Mats songs figured out for guitar (Alex Chilton, My Little Problem, and a few more..) that don't seem to be in the Skyway archives, I could try and post them if there is any interest from other guitartists out there. Also, I'm always looking for more bootlegs, I've got some to trade, and rare stuff, like the original version of "Can't Hardly Wait", so if anyone is looking to trade, drop me line. Ok, well that's my first post, hopefully future ones will be more interesting. John Walston Min oc minoc Trinity College "I fell ... did you feel low? ... not at all.. huh?.. Man! My first week of getting 'Skyway' and Bob dies ! Bob was the reason I was initially atracted to the Replacements. I was in my first year of university taking classical music (and really hating it) when I saw the Replacements on Saturday Night Live. They blew me away! Bob was kind of a fat balding guy but he was wearing a dress, and rolling around on stage and just looking like he was having a ball. I'd never seen anything like that before. My idea of rock (~1985) was ZZ Top or Genisis. I thought punk rockers were skinheads who spat at each other during shows. The whole band was rocking like hell and smiling and playing like they didn't give a crap if anybody liked them or not. Their "who gives a crap, let's just rock" atitude really resonated in me. I went out that weekend and bought Tim. After finishing that year of school, I moved to Toronto and was a free-lance drummer for a couple of years. Ironically, I was getting gigs as a funk, and R&B drummer, athough I empathized more with the 'Mats, Iggy, the Sex Pistols ... bla bla bla ... Now I'm finishing up a computer science degree. Lately I've been more into Flop, Superchunk, SuperConductor, Rheostatics, Hole and Helmet. I'd like to thank the Skyway for rekindling my interest in the Replacments. Unfortunately, I never saw them play live. Eagerly waiting for Superchunk to come to Victoria, British Columbia ... Glad to find the Skyway. I'm catching up on Matt's BestOf compilations, but I didn't want to wait with my intro. From two Skyways and five BestOfs, I seem unique in that I'm a 44 year-old recovering drunk. My 'Mats introduction came sometime in 1984. The U of Maryland's 10 Watt station played "Unsatisfied" a lot. I taped their programs to feed my music hunger. I'd done the same since the mid 70's with other stations, but little interested me since the latter new wave/punk days in the D.C. area. "Unsatisfied" became the anthem of my crashing life. By summer of 1985 I hung out in an unfinished basement with my Jack Daniels/bong/crank/wine, and my cheap stereo wailing about my lonely, miserable existence. I had a good computer-industry job, home, etc., but a shitty life inside. I found Let It Be and Hootenany, and got a mild lift from the music, although "Within Your Reach" just gave me more excuses to cry, as I related it to a failed interoffice affair (bad idea to face a lost lover every day). I think (and thank) it and "Unsatisfied" helped me see how low I had gotten. And then I detoxed... ...and when I got out I slowly discovered I could still enjoy all my old music. In fact it was better. I fell in love with Sorry Ma (to this day its my favorite). Discovered driving to the 'Mats without fumbling with my pipe was intensely enjoyable. Then at 3 months sober a young lady home for Thanksgiving bebopped into my NA meeting, catching my horn-encrusted eye. At Xmas, I gave her Tim (a recent release) as a present, and she figured this old(er) guy was ... interesting (I didn't know it at the time, but she was a DJ at a college radio station). "Kiss Me On The Bus" became a reality for us as we dated 200 miles apart. "Within Your Reach" was how we felt at the end of every weekend when we parted. 2 1/2 years later we got married. For both of us the 'Mats are deeply loved for their place in our little romance (which is still goin' strong). I saw the 'Mats three times, but never with Bob. The first time I had front row seats, and took my newly-sober brother-in-law, who doubted this was a proper place for him to be in. Had a blast (I think this was 1987), and was amazed when they were so professional, not like the stories I've heard, and that y'all tell. I had found "Shit hits the fans", and was afraid we wouldn't hear any complete songs. Instead they blew me away, especially when I heard "Another Girl..." (I'm an Only Ones fan too). This was fun stuff. The second time I went with my wife. Another favorite of mine, Tommy Keene, opened the show. Emotionally I orgasmed all night. Tommy always gets me up, then the 'Mats got me off -- I cried/screamed/danced... my wife cringed (she's a bit restrained in public). Every one around me was drunk, and wanted to hear 'Sorry Ma' rockers, but the set was mostly Tim and Don't Tell A Soul. The third show was probably in 90 or 91. Paul was newly sober, but physically didn't look too good. The show was great, but not as outstanding as the other two. Right now, I'm out of my 'Mats cycle. I've learned to recycle music interests -- sometimes I gotta play Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt heavy, other times I dig up my Eno or Mott The Hoople, oh its Tommy Keene/Flaming Groovies/Only Ones time, wow I gotta hear some Pat Metheny... Lately I've been discovering Husker Du and Sugar. Several months ago I found a 'Mats boot called Shit, Shower and Shave, which got my 'Mats interest up again. All your talk of other boots and songs I haven't encountered yet has my fire kindling -- how do I tap into this? I'm especially slobbering to find "If Only You Were Lonely", which seems to be a favorite here, and which I've NEVER heard! And why does everyone hate "Someone I Once Knew"? So thats my intro. I'll see what I can add later. How many sober 'Mats fans are out there? -- Duncan deGraffenreid (duncand@sonnyj.btna.com) [#2 right here. -- M@] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 30 Apr 1995 21:02:00 -0400 From: Steve&Melissa Kirsch Subject: Hey Hi, since the intro stuff said it's "customary" for new people to start writing right away, rather than lurking for a while (which is what I tend to do in most lists) here goes: I saw the Replacements 5 times, twice with Bob, three with Slim. To say that the Bob shows were "better" is so much of an undersatement as to be laughable. The first was in August of '85, the pre-Tim tour. It's the only time I saw them do the early jems from the days that they were still referred to as a "hardcore" band, like "Takin' a Ride" and "Rattlesnake." When I say the "early jems" I mean the first lp stuff. Tho' I did see them do "Johnny's Gonna Die" more than once... That show was pretty great, but **nothing** in comparison to a February '86 Tim-tour show at the U. of Pennsylvania. Bob either had a diaper or a dress on (I can't remember which). They were really the 'Mats that nite, not "The Replacements." They played nearly all of Let It Be, most of Hootenanny, most of Tim, half of Stink (including a more-searing-than-usual Kids Don't Follow), and a couple from Sorry Ma. On later tours, they gave Tommy a separate microphone, but those were the days when he'd come sliding/stubling/lurching across the stage in sloppy, but just fucking perfect time to yell "Hospital" just as Paul would finish singing "Take me down.." all into the same single microphone. . . I don't want to say that Slim "sucked," but he clearly couldn't even tune Bob's guitar. An '87 Pleased To Meet Me show in Philly was dissapointing only because i knew (a) they used to be able to do so much better, and (b) they literally **couldn't** play any of the faster old songs. Slim just couldn't play that fast!! I skipped evry headline tour thereafter, but I think, inretrospect, I may have made a mistake. I don't go back one iota on my opinion of Slim's general worth to the live shows versus Bob's, but the two times I caught them in opening slots for more popular artists--once on each of the tours for the last two lps--they blew me away with their enthusiasm, if not their song selection or guitar virtuosity. I sorely miss them, even the later Bob-less version, though. I realized, too late I guess, that even a Slim-Dunlap Replacements is better than none at all. Anyway, hope I didn't piss off too many Slim fans out there...See ya. --Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 4 May 1995 18:50:53 -0500 (EDT) From: "Shelton M. I grew up in Omaha, NE, a hotbed of Mats fans. I live in Maine now (a senior at bowdoin college). I first heard the Mats in junior high, and over the course of high school saw them 3 times (the last three tours) all at the Peony Park Ballroom in the big O. Anyway, what prompted me to join, besides stimulating discourse on my favorite band of the 80s, is that I want live recordings! I have four bootlegs of the "shit" series in crappy crappy shape. I saw one double CD that is two concerts recorded off radio, i think--but it cost 50$, a little more than i can spend on CDs at this point (incidentally the concerts are from 89 and 91--not bad song selection, but few of the loose , wacky covers of earlier years). Anyways, if anyone knows where i can lay my hands on some of this stuff for a reasonable price please let me know. Also, i don't know how rare the CDs i saw are, but if i break down and buy them i'm of course willing to send copies to anyone who sends me a blank tape. Looking forward to the list, Mike Hendricks shendric@polar.bowdoin.edu PS my favorite album is let it be. it would break my heart to pick a favorite song. i think bob was better than slim. i think chris mars/bash n pop/paul all stink. those are pretty much the only things i have opinions about when it comes to the Mats...the rest is just fun. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 1 May 95 8:38:49 EDT From: Duncan deGraffenreid Subject: (fwd) Mats in Egypt (fwd) This isn't my story, but it was interesting. "As a college graduation gift, my father took me on a safari to Africa in 1990. The first leg of the safari was a week in Luxor, Egypt. Among the items I packed for the safari were my walkman, all my Replacements tapes, and $700.00 worth of safari clothes from Banana Republic. (If you ever want to look like a total tourist in Africa, wear safari looking gear, something you would see Jim from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom wearing.... All the tour guides in Africa wear t-shirts and jeans.) Anyway, after spending our first day in Egypt, my dad and I befriended an elderly cab driver named Hassan. Hassan offered to be our personal cab driver for the week - for the equivalent of $20, he was our personal chauffeur, picking us up in the morning and driving us around until the evening. The only problem with Hassan was that he spoke no English except one phrase - "Very Good, Very Nice, Lovely" (VGVNL). For instance, if I asked Hassan to take us to a certain Egyptian ruin, he would reply, "VGVNL." If my dad asked him to take us back to the hotel, he would reply "VGVNL". If I asked Hassan where the nearest rest room was, he would reply "VGVNL". It got to the point where every time my dad and I would ask Hassan anything, we would join him in saying "VGVNL." Hassan had a tape in his cab which he constantly played, it was some really cool Egyptian music. I asked him if he knew where I could purchase it, and he gave it to me on the last day. In return, I gave him a Replacements Best Of tape that I had on me, saying - "This is the greatest music in America. It is" Very Good, Very Nice, Lovely". My dad and I took a picture of us with Hassan as a souvenir, and then proceeded to Kenya. Two months ago, a fraternity brother of mine visited Egypt. As he was going to be staying at the same hotel in Luxor that I stayed at five years ago, I gave him the picture of us with Hassan, and asked him to see if he could find him to say hello for us. Sure enough, on the very first day of his arrival, he showed the picture to a cab driver, and within twenty minutes, Hassan arrived at the hotel. My friend hired Hassan for the day to take him to the Valley of the Kings, some ancient ruins. On the ride there, Hassan popped in a tape and said to my friend, "Very Good, Very Nice, Lovely". Sure enough - it was the Replacements tape I had given Hassan. My friend got a real kick out of this - and told me Hassan's favorite songs were "Within Your Reach", "Answering Machine" and "Go." No kidding. The only song Hassan seemed to dislike was "I'm in Trouble". My friend didn't have any tapes to give Hassan - but he gave Hassan an Afghan Whigs t-shirt. How cool would it be to see Hassan driving around Egypt now wearing that t-shirt and blasting "Color Me Impressed" from his cab!" -- Duncan deGraffenreid (duncand@sonnyj.btna.com) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Apr 1995 19:21:32 -0400 (EDT) From: "Michael C. Shannon" Subject: paul in musician fellow 'mats- I came across an article in the april Musician magazine that was called something like "If I knew Then What I Knew Now". Paul was the first of 30 musicians in it. These are his pearls of wisdom: If anyone gives you criticism that starts off "you should" or "you shouldn't," walk away immediately. Anyone who tells you NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE is a liar. It's either impossible or it's simple and if it's not simple then you're doing it wrong. Whether it's lyrics or drumming or wardrobe: Keep it simple. Here's the one I should have followed: If you're pretty much the same as everyone, if you're normal, don't try to be different! And if you are different please don't try to be normal. It takes a lot of courage to be different but it takes a great deal of hard work to be the same. I think in the end you get the same result but you've got to be what you are. A lot of people try to be different and it just rings hollow. If you need family and friends to come down to see you perform you're no performer. Never underestimate the value of bad press; in the end it's about the same as good because it makes people talk about you. It's only when they don't write about you at all that you're doing something wrong. Never let a photographer take you outside. That just means he has a tree he wants to take a picture of and he needs someone to stand in front of it. You don't see Madonna out in fuckin' cornfields!
