Newest Folks Subject: Skyway Christmas tape trade Date: Fri, 8 Nov 1996 00:55:59 -0500 (EST) From: Denis McDowell Subject: New Regular Hi. I'm Denis, a Philadelphia transplant living in Greensboro, NC. I saw my first 'Mats show in 1986 at the City Gardens in Trenton, NJ. A pal of mine won tickets, and I went because I was looking for a girl that I met at a Black Flag show a week earlier. I was a little familiar with the Replacements, but I wouldn't say that I was a fan. The band came out and Tommy, looking great in striped bell-bottoms, suspender, and top hat said "We're fuckin' inebriated, let's go!". The set started with rocking covers of "That'll be the day" "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Back in Black". From that point, I was hooked. I went the next night to see the show in Philly, and I swear that those two shows remain the greatest rock 'n roll shows I have ever seen. A few years later, after Bob had left/been kicked out, I decided to take a semester off from college (that subsequently lasted eight years), bought a '65 Ford and decided to move to San Francisco. On the way I stopped in Omaha, NE to visit an old buddy, who it turned out was on the events committee at his college and was working sound for the 'Mats that night. I got to watch the drunks from backstage, and while I missed Bob, Slim was amazing. I was in heaven. I saw the band a few more times before they split, and it was always good. I read somewhere that if you were born between 1967 and 1972 than the Replacements and Husker Du were your Beatles and Stones. I don't generally like those types of comparisons, but I understand what the writer was trying to say. I'm not all that crazy about most of Paul's solo stuff, but I may not be listening to it objectively. I keep waiting to hear another Tim or Let it Be. Oh well. P.S. By the way, a buddy of mine in Philly just sold his record store and while we were going through some of his old shit I came across a three video promo issued by WB for Tim. Each video is exactly the same (the famous speaker video for "Bastards of Young") but has a different song. The songs are "Bastards", "Left of the Dial" and "Here Comes a Regular". I'm trying to buy it from him. The box is really cool and the insert has a bunch of great articles and photos. Date: Sat, 09 Nov 1996 12:03:50 -0600 From: Francie Cutter My name is Weston. I subscribed to the Skyway about 10 minutes ago, and now I'm gonna do this survey, but with minor changes. I totally love the Replacements, my favorite album being "Let It Be" and song "Unsatisfied" (or "If Only You Were Lonely"). I'm only 18, and I feel like I'm thirteen, so I guess, um, whatever. I got into the 'Mats because my best friend and I were watching MTV and we saw the video for "Dyslexic Heart" and we both kinda dug it. He bought single sndtrk, then 14 Songs and I took both and fell in love. I got Hootenanny first, cause I wanted Within Your Reach, but one night a few months ago, I went out and got Let it Be, Tim, and Don't Tell a Soul. Now, I have everything but Sorry Ma . . . and Stink. I haven't heard anything from any other Mats in post-'Mats music settings. I assume I wouldn't really care either. I love Paul, I love the chaos of the 'Mats, but seeing Tommy or Chris or even hearing them wouldn't really matter to me. I've heard the new Perfect disc, but I don't dig it. I'm so new with the Replacements that I don't have enough information to expand any further. By the way, I would love all possible information on 'Mats bootlegs Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!! The Mats have been my favorite band for a few years now and, when I finally got hooked up to the net, I went searching for others who were interested. I'm also looking for bootlegs and I didn't know how to start. Let's see... I'm a college student in Baltimore, MD but it sucks so I'm leaving next semester - I'm going to work at some shitty bar in Dublin before transferring to another school in the fall. I'm younger than most listeners: 19, which may be the only thing that separates me from anyone else on this mailing list. I'm also a vegetarian, which doesn't lend itself well to beer filled, hamburger eating nights listening to the Mats. I actually first heard Paul on the "Singles" soundtrack. My girlfriend at the time was dyslexic, so I decided to play it for her. We broke up. Still a great song though. I didn't really get into the Mats until a little later. I used to hang out in the now defunct "Digits Compact Discs" (which went on to be my employer for a time) and I found a copy of "All Shook Down" in the used section. I was nominally impressed, so I got it. I ended up finding "Tim" used a little later and was hooked. I bought all the other albums within about 2 weeks. I grew up as a pop metal kid and, I have to admit, I sometimes still like to put on an old Poison album and play air guitar in front of the mirror. My roommate hates me. Anyway... I learned to play guitar and went through high school with a series of bands, my favorite of which was "ArugelaEndive" (named after lettuce). We had a song called "If I'm a Dickhead, Will You Date Me?" which I figure pretty much sums up everything about love or the lack there of. I'm a writer, or at least that's what I pretend to be - an occupation which allowed me to write for the school newspaper and promptly got the school's chapter of the Federation of Christian Athletes to egg my house. I also produced, edited, and wrote an independent magazine which I distributed at my high school. Inside the first and only edition, I placed all the pictures from the "Let It Be" cover and some solo pictures of Paul. I also quoted one of my favorite quotes: "Lonely, I guess that's where I'm from". Anyway...the principal didn't like the magazine and I got to be expelled from high school the last three weeks of my senior year. I'm still not allowed on campus. I don't have any personal run ins with the Mats as a band. I did see Paul live in DC this past August. Afterwards, I managed to see him and we talked about jazz. We actually exchanged names, something he hadn't done with anyone else that had gone to get his autograph. I've also gotten drunk numerous times while singing "Here Comes A Regular" and getting very depressed - I put my head through a 2-panel wood wall one time and my hand through a glass pane another. Anyway, my other favorite bands include Springsteen, The Clash, The Police, Velvet Underground, Dylan, any and all old Motown stuff, and some jazz. I read a lot and have grandiose visions of writing for Rolling Stone or Spin. Anybody is welcome to write me at "rleahey@goucher.edu" if the spirit moves them. 'Tim' was the first record I heard and I absolutely loved it. I started hearing more about the band's history and their live performances and I became even more excited. Of course, since I only found out about them two years ago, I never got to see them perform... and that's a big bummer (but there no point in dwelling on the past). So....this summer I went to two of Paul's shows during the Eventually tour. First was the S.F. show at the Fillmore. This was the first time I had seen PW in person...he was fantastic and I fell in love instantly. The Fillmore always gives out posters of that nights performer as you leave the show...so I got my poster of Paul on the way out and was very happy. As we walked out, two giant tour busses were waiting right outside. I figured 'what the heck' we'll wait for a few minutes.... Paul came right out, walked directly on to the tour bus and had a seat at the top of the stairwell. I was the second person to talk to him as I managed to jump in before the majority of the crowd did. What the hell do you say to someone like Paul Westerberg????? The first thing I said was, "So...do you have a girlfriend?". (I'm a total dork!!!) Well, he answered that question rather thoughtfully and we entered into a short but interesting exchange on our feelings about relationships. I told him I loved the show, gave him a giant hug, and was on my way. For the next three days all I listened to was PW and the Replacements...over and over and over again. Then on Tuesday I had to fly to Los Angeles for business. I arrived there at 6:00 p.m. or so and had the rest of the evening to do whatever I wanted to do. So I picked up the phone and called TicketMaster to find out what was going on that night. It was Tuesday Sep. 17.. the night before my birthday.. Sep. 18 and I wanted to do something special. Guess what!!!!! Paul was in town that night playing at the Troubadour in Hollywood. I was floored when I heard that. It was fate, I had to go see Paul. The show was sold out, but I went anyways. It took me about 45 minutes to talk the door man into letting me inside, but he finally caved, and I was in!!!!! What an incredible night... Well those are some of my Paul stories in a nutshell. Now, here's some of my personal info... *28 years old *California native *moved to Philadelphia a month ago for work, love the area but I haven't really connected with anyone yet and that gets me down sometimes *I'm a chemist *I have two dogs *I love skiing, swimming, running *I'm shy at times, obnoxious at others *Other music I'm into......Luna, Aztec Camera, Barry White, Concrete Blonde, Paul Weller, Cowboy Junkies, Lenny Kravitz, Lloyd Cole, Wedding Present, Lemonheads.... Tommy From: salc@con2.com (Sal_c) Newsgroups: alt.music.replacements Subject: PERFECT OPEN FOR BIG STAR IN NYC! Date: Sat, 16 Nov 1996 21:51:22 GMT Last night was the first of 2 shows in NYC for Big Star with opening acts Perfect, Superdrag and Yo La Tengo. It was the first time I have seen Perfect and they were energetic, fun, and hard rockin, everything you want in a live band. Much better than their EP. And a couple of new songs hold well for the future (as good as if not better than the tunes on "...Chicken"). They also get bonus points for stage attire including the best footwear front line I've seen all year. For the record, Tommy had on a pair of spit-shined patent leather boots, the bass player had two-tone oxfords, and the lead guitarist suede hush puppies with crepe soles. Quite tasteful all around. They also got a terrific response from the crowd although they went on pretty early (8:30) and it was obvious few had a clue who they were. Superdrag were as boring as their album would you leave you to believe and the singer was insufferable; he may think he's Paul McCartney but Bobby Brady came more immediately to mind; without the wit and charm that is. Yo La Tengo were up to their usual shenanigans; lots of looped keyboards, hypnotic melodies and innovative guitar playing from Ira Kaplan, probably the most underrated player in indie-rockdom. And the hometown crowd ate it up. They also provided the wackiest moment of the night by ending with a ramshackle version of that hoary Sham 69 classic "Bortsal Breakout" complete with 'stun' guitar solo by Georgia (their drummer). Big Star were, well, Big Star. Not radically different from any of the other reunion shows they've been doing on and off for the past few years. Their lack of rehearsal time showed, especially Jon Auer (Posies) who seemed a little lost most of the night...they did add a couple of new tunes to their repertoire; "For You" with Jody on vocals and "Jesus Christ" with some terribly improvised lyrics, and a new song (!) called "Hot Thing" which Alex admits sounds more than a little like the Troggs. Oh yeah, and a beautiful version of "Girl From Ipanema" which he managed to remember all the words to. If Big Star manage to make it to your town do whatever you can to be there. God knows bills like these are the reason I love living in New York so much. Newsgroups: alt.music.replacements From: bpartsch@carroll.com (Bill Partsch) Date: Sun, 17 Nov 1996 10:49:56 GMT Subject: Perfect/Big Star, Second Night Hi, Everybody: (Dr. Nick Riviera here! Just kiddin'.) I missed the first night of the Big Star monster bill (saw Billy Bragg and Robyn Hitchcock instead), but I went tonight. Sal's assessment on the first three bands is pretty accurate for the most part. I can't say I would have been as rough on Superdrag, but I tend to be a bit generous in that regard. They didn't blow me away, but they weren't insufferable, either. They didn't demand my attention. On Perfect, Sal pretty much nailed it. Lots of energy, decent enough songs. I don't have any Perfect recordings. Thus I can't make any comparisons. I will say that Tommy's guitar sound is highly reminiscent of...well...his brother's. To me, the two main ex-Mats shake down thusly in terms of live performing: Paul got all the songs and Tommy got most of the energy. That said, the Paul shows I saw this year left me much more satisfied than the Perfect show. It will be interesting to see where they both go from here. As for Big Star, I enjoyed them plenty. I didn't notice that Jon Auer was lost, unlike Sal. I thought he was generally pretty sharp, especially for a guy who seemed to be enjoying a fair amount of Jack Daniels during the course of the set. If anything, I thought the bass player, Ken Stringfellow, was having some sort of technical problem with his ax. For their encores, the guys decided to do three songs they hadn't rehearsed, which means basically that Alex starts a song he knows and the other guys try to learn it on the spot. They pulled off three pretty good ones, including a nifty version of "Day Tripper," which we got instead of "Girl from Ipanema." Also, during the main set, Ken had trouble keeping his pants up. So Alex Chilton took of his own belt and gave it to Ken. While all this was transpiring, Jon Auer, the other Posie guy, manning the second guitar, ripped into a funky guitar groove. Drummer Jody Stephens joined in, and after Alex handed off his belt, he picked it up, too. Turns out it was an impromptu snippet of "Love Rollercoaster" by the Ohio Players. I love moments like that. After the show, I stuck around in the club, half looking for a couple friends I had come with and half waiting for minor celebrities to appear from the stageside door. I was really waiting to talk to Jon and Ken, but Tommy came out, so I figured what the heck. I said hi, introduced myself and shook his hand. A significant moment of my Mats experience concerns Tommy, and I attempted to relate that to him, but the man was exorbitantly drunk, and I can virtually assure the world that he will not likely remember a word I said to him or that he even encountered me...ever. This incident was no great disappointment to me. I was with someone, though, who would have loved to meet Tommy, but she didn't realize he had even come out into the club until he was already on his way back to the dressing room. She was bummed she didn't get to meet him, but if she had met him at that time, in my opinion, she would have been much more let down than stoked up. He was really fucked up, utterly beyond charm. Isn't it ironic, don't you think? Alright then. Enough of me. --Bill From: Matsfann@aol.com Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 03:20:37 -0500 Matt, O.K. something big happened the other night in Los Angeles. Two Fridays ago, at club Largo in Hollywood, Tommy and Paul played together with Jon Bryon, the guitar player for Aimee Mann. Unfortunately, they didn't do any Replacements tunes. But they did do Dear Prudence by the Beatles, Substitute by the Who, and apparently some other songs. I wasn't at the show, but my friend owns the club and she told me about it two days later. She told me that the show was great. I also got that info confirmed by two other guys (one of them is a regular, lttlmscara@aol.com) who I met at the Lemonheads (they blew) show in Hollywood last night. They told me that Paul and Tommy had played, and I basically was pulling out my hair. So anyway, the two played some tunes together and I wasn't there. Last week, I saw Perfect open up for Wilco. They put on a great show and it is totally apparent to me that Tommy should be a rock star. He was way into the show and seemed intent on putting on a good one. His back up band is really tight, and they sing better then he does. However, as a whole, the show was too damn loud. He is going to go deaf soon. Highlights were Mrs. Self Esteem, Don't Need to Know Where, Sometimes, Makes Me Happy, and a new one that just ruled. Tommy's guitar player also sang a song that was pretty cool too. The major highlight of the show however was the exclusion of Alternative Monkey, a song that should never have been recorded, played or even written. All in all, Tommy's band rocks, albeit too loudly, and he should be a rock star. Chuck _____________________________________________________________________________ V. I've only heard it once so this may be premature, but here goes. It starts off promising...in fact 'Ain't No Fair' sounds really good. 'Girlfriend' is charming in a Todd Rundgren-y kind of way. 'Hate This Town' gets into some serious Dylan country. Unfortunately, by the time the cd gets to 'Jungle Out Here' it really runs out of gas. 'Cozy,' which sounded good live, doesn't really work here. The rest of the CD kind of limps along with a final gasp at the end for the title track. I think it could have been better. Seems like some of the tempos are a tad slow and lack energy. Of course, the biggest disappointment was that Slim failed to include my favorite song---"I Wanna Be a Big Star Like Paul Westerberg." One way to try and remedy this would be for some benevolent record label to put out a compilation or box set of the 'Mats greatest stuff, so I was thinking that maybe us Skyway folks should take this as a mission and try to make it happen. In a perfect world, I imagine a 2-CD set coming out - one with their best released stuff and a second with live tracks, outtakes, demos, etc., with Pete Buck or some majorly-in-debt-to-the-'Mats alt rocker writing some fawning liner notes. Would be an absolute killer, in my opinion. I have no idea how this would work as I suppose Twin-Tone (now part of some other label I think) would have the rights to the pre-Tim stuff, while Sire would have the rest, but I'd think Rykodisc would be a good label to approach as they've got a reputation for re-releasing over-looked stuff (Big Star's 'Sister Lovers/3rd' is a good example) that isn't necessarily going to be a monster seller. I think I remember reading somewhere that they also have some Minneapolis tie-in (an office there, maybe) that might also help. So Matt, what do you think? Maybe you could start some kinda electronic petition and get it off to Ryko (or whoever) as an indication of interest (I gotta believe a 'Mats best CD would sell more than Big Star's 'Sister Lovers'). Skyway subscribers would be an obvious place to start; let me know how I can help. Regards, Mike _____________________________________________________________________________ VIII. I have a fair amount of bootlegs, Mats and otherwise, so drop me an email and I'll send you my list. 03/17/89 - Palace Theatre, Albany, NY - 90 min. Other shows I saw but don't see on the list include a performance at UMass during the Pleased to Meet Me Tour, and in Springfield, MA, during the Don't Tell a Soul tour, I think. If anyone happens to have recording of either of these, I'd also be interested in swapping. Thanks. -Mark (timmins@cbpi.com) From: MRTimmins@aol.com Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 21:38:27 -0500 The Fans Hit Back II is now complete. Everyone (with one exception, see below**) who was involved in the project has been sent their copy. Anyone else who wants to check out their talented comrades in action making their own kind of music can email to order a copy of the tape. **Missing in Action: Jimmie Farmer, from the band Malchicks. Jimmie are you out there? I used your band's songs on the tape, and mailed you a tape to the address on your CD, but it came back to me. Where are you now? -Mark fin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The //Skyway\\: The Replacements Mailing List (digest only) To subscribe, send a letter saying "subscribe skyway" to "majordomo@novia.net" http://www.novia.net/~matt/sky/skyway.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Keep your chin up and I'll watch the highway while we drive off for somewhere cheap and amazing." - Small Factory
